Braves Place Austin Riley on Injured List Again Amid Struggles; No Return Date Set
Austin Riley's return to the injured list affects Braves’ lineup; replacements Alvarez Jr. and Ornelas brought from Gwinnett.

The Atlanta Braves have placed third baseman Austin Riley on the 10-day injured list due to an abdominal strain, according to a recent team announcement. Along with Riley’s move, outfielder Jarred Kelenic was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett, while infielders Nacho Alvarez Jr. and Jonathan Ornelas were recalled from Gwinnett to fill roster spots.

Riley’s Recent Injury History and On-Field Performance

Riley, 28, had already missed roughly two weeks last month with a similar abdominal injury, only being reinstated from the injured list on July 25. His second return proved brief, as he struggled offensively before this latest IL placement. In the time between injury stints, Riley hit two home runs but tallied just four hits in 39 plate appearances, producing a .108 batting average with a .154 on-base percentage and .297 slugging. He also struck out 15 times, which accounts for 38.5% of his plate appearances.

Seasonal Struggles Highlight Riley’s Decline

This season has been a disappointment for Riley overall. His slash line of .260/.309/.428, equivalent to a 104 weighted runs created plus (wRC+), is the lowest full-season production of his career outside of his debut midseason in 2019 and the shortened 2020 campaign. His walk rate has dipped to a career-low 6%, while his strikeout percentage has climbed to 28.6%, both worst marks over a full major league season. Additionally, Riley’s isolated power (ISO) stands at .168, marking his weakest power output since reaching the majors.

Uncertainty Surrounding Riley’s Return to Action

The Braves have not provided a timetable for when Riley might rejoin the active roster. Typically, a player facing a recurring injury after a brief comeback will face a longer recovery period this time, with the team likely proceeding cautiously. Manager Brian Snitker is expected to offer more clarity on Riley’s condition following his next media update.

Jarred Kelenic Sent Down as Braves Adjust Roster

Jarred Kelenic, 26, appeared in only one game during his latest stint with Atlanta and did not record a plate appearance, serving solely as a pinch-runner. The former top prospect was optioned back to Triple-A Gwinnett after struggling at the major league level, posting a .167/.231/.300 batting line over 65 plate appearances earlier this year. His performance has not improved significantly in Triple-A, where he holds a .218/.289/.321 slash across 308 plate appearances, accompanied by a 27.3% strikeout rate. With arbitration eligibility coming up for a second time this offseason, Kelenic’s future with the Braves appears uncertain, as he is considered a probable non-tender candidate.

Infield Reinforcements: Nacho Alvarez Jr. and Jonathan Ornelas

Nacho Alvarez Jr., primarily sidelined this year due to a wrist injury, has posted mixed results. In a small sample of 32 major league plate appearances, he has struggled, but his 84 trips to the plate in Triple-A Gwinnett have featured a promising .405 on-base percentage, showing patience and selectivity. Alvarez remains a prospect hoping to establish himself as a regular player for Atlanta after demonstrating potential throughout the Braves’ minor league system.

Jonathan Ornelas is set to make his debut with Atlanta as he takes the field for the first time. Acquired from the Texas Rangers in May via a cash trade, Ornelas is a versatile infielder who can play second base, third base, and shortstop. Although he has limited major league experience with a total of 54 plate appearances spread over three seasons with Texas, he brings solid defense and speed, though with limited power. Ornelas’s combined Triple-A performance between Texas and Atlanta amounts to a .202/.320/.300 batting line over 319 plate appearances, reflecting room for growth at the major league level.

Implications for the Braves’ Roster and Season Outlook

The Braves face challenges as Austin Riley’s ongoing health issues disrupt their infield stability during a crucial stretch of the season. With no immediate return date set, the team must rely on depth options like Alvarez and Ornelas to fill the void at third base. Meanwhile, Kelenic’s demotion underscores the difficulty some players are having establishing themselves under high expectations. Manager Brian Snitker will likely adjust his lineup and rotation strategies as the Braves navigate these obstacles, emphasizing the importance of roster flexibility moving forward.
