Ben Shelton Reveals What Flavio Cobolli Said After Their Tense Canadian Open Exchange

Ben Shelton and Flavio Cobolli engaged in a tense moment at the net following their fourth-round match at the Canadian Open. Shelton secured a hard-fought victory over the in-form Italian, winning 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1), which extended his run and highlighted his mental toughness in critical moments.

The confrontation appeared linked to a gesture Cobolli made during gameplay, which Shelton seemed unhappy about. Their exchange continued briefly as Cobolli was exiting the court before they eventually shook hands. Despite the heated post-match interaction, Shelton was quick to praise Cobolli’s performance during the match.

Reflecting on his opponent, Shelton said,

“Yeah, I think I was really mentally tough tonight,”

and added,

“I got to give credit to Flavio, he did a lot of things throughout the match that made it difficult.”

He further noted,

“I thought he played very well. He’s really fast, neutralizes a lot of things that I do well, and that’s always a tough matchup for me, so just happy to come through it.”

When questioned about the incident, Shelton clarified that the matter had been resolved. Describing their discussion in the locker room, he explained,

“Yeah, we talked about it. He said it wasn’t towards me. We’re good. We talked about it in the locker room, so I’m not going to answer any more questions about that. There’s no story, we’re good, that’s it, so, thanks.”

Ben Shelton Drives Historic American Presence at Canadian Open Quarterfinals

Moving past the on-court tension, Shelton now focuses on his first-ever quarterfinal appearance at the Canadian Open. Currently ranked world number seven, he is pursuing his goal of qualifying for the ATP Finals for the first time this season.

Shelton is joined by fellow Americans Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen, as all three reached the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 event. This accomplishment marks the first time in 21 years that three American men have advanced this far in such a major tournament. The last occurrence was at Indian Wells in 2004, when Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, and James Blake reached the quarterfinal stage.

Highlighting this milestone, the statistic read,

“Three Americans (Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Alex Michelsen) have reached the quarter-final at an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time since Indian Wells in 2004 (Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, James Blake). Big.”

Back in 2004, only Agassi reached the semifinals, a feat Shelton now aims to match or exceed at the Canadian Open. His opponent in the quarters will be Alex de Minaur, the Washington Open champion, who carries an eight-match winning streak into their first-ever meeting scheduled for August 5.

This matchup presents another significant opportunity for Shelton as he continues to cement his status among the top players on the ATP Tour.
