The Jacksonville Jaguars are finalizing their running back roles with a clear focus on utilizing Tank Bigsby as a short-yardage back while continuing to leverage Travis Etienne Jr.’s receiving skills. ESPN’s Dan Graziano highlighted the team’s plans in a Monday update, emphasizing the Jaguars’ intent to use a committee approach with four running backs on the roster.

The Jaguars appreciate Etienne Jr.’s threat in the passing game, especially on screen plays, where he is seen as “very dangerous.” Meanwhile, Bigsby is considered the more physical runner, likely handling carries near the goal line or in short-yardage situations.

Committee Strategy to Maximize Backfield Talent

The team aims to keep four running backs who will contribute in varying roles throughout the season. According to Graziano, the coaching staff views Etienne Jr. as a versatile weapon in head coach Liam Coen’s offense, particularly valued for his ability to catch passes in the screen game. Bigsby, conversely, fits the profile of a power back used in heavy-contact situations.

Rookie fourth-round pick Bhayshul Tuten is expected to bring speed and big-play ability but is currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Seventh-round rookie LeQuint Allen Jr. also projects to develop into a reliable third-down back given his aptitude for catching passes and pass protection.

“For fantasy, it sounds like a stay-away situation until concrete roles develop,”

Graziano noted.

Comparing Performance and Recent Changes in Coaching

Last season, Etienne and Bigsby split touches almost evenly, with 189 and 175 carries respectively. Bigsby had the edge in rushing efficiency, averaging 4.6 yards per carry compared to Etienne’s 3.7. However, Etienne’s role in the passing game was considerably larger, catching 39 passes for 254 yards, while Bigsby caught only seven for 54 yards.

The Jaguars face a new era with Liam Coen stepping in as offensive coordinator, replacing Doug Pederson. This change could impact how the running backs are deployed, but the committee approach appears likely to remain in place.

Looking Ahead to the Upcoming Season

Recent rookies like Bucky Irving and Rachaad White made significant contributions on the ground last year, with Irving amassing 1,514 yards and eight touchdowns across 254 touches. White also saw substantial playing time, gaining 1,006 yards and scoring nine touchdowns. How Coen will balance these contributions with the returns of Etienne Jr. and Bigsby remains to be seen.

The Jaguars will reveal their approach as the 2025 season kicks off at home against the Carolina Panthers on September 7. The evolving backfield roles and strategic emphasis on both power running and dynamic receiving could shape Jacksonville’s offensive identity moving forward.

Rookie fourth-rounder Bhayshul Tuten, who pulled a hamstring in the practice I attended, is the speed merchant and home run threat at the position. And seventh-round rookie LeQuint Allen Jr. is a player they see evolving into a third-down back due to his pass-catching and pass protection abilities. For fantasy, it sounds like a stay-away situation until concrete roles develop.
