William Byron Credits iRacing for Iowa Trifecta Success: “Those Are Usually Our Fastest Tracks”
William Byron achieves Iowa trifecta with victories across Cup, Xfinity, and Trucks, thanks to extensive iRacing experience.

William Byron, the accomplished Team Hendrick driver, attributes much of his recent success at Iowa Speedway to his extensive experience with iRacing. Byron’s history with the online racing simulation began in his early teens, where he secured multiple victories and championships. This background provided a crucial foundation that eventually earned him a tryout with Team Hendrick and helped transition him into professional stock car racing.

Byron’s recent victory at Iowa is a prime example of how skills developed through iRacing can translate directly to real-world racing, particularly at tracks like Iowa Speedway. He has now achieved wins at this venue across three different NASCAR series — the Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and the Camping World Truck Series — underscoring his adaptability and mastery of the track.

Using iRacing as a Virtual Training Ground

Byron credits the similarity between iRacing and actual racing at Iowa Speedway for helping him prepare effectively. He explains that his familiarity with the track largely comes from thousands of laps completed in the simulator during his formative years. The timing of iRacing’s calendar further supported this, as it often matched the summer months when Byron had the most time for practice.

“There’s certain tracks I’ve had a lot of success on,”

Byron remarked during post-race interviews, emphasizing how iRacing was especially valuable for tracks like Iowa and Pocono. The virtual laps helped him build an intuitive understanding of these circuits’ rhythms, which has translated into real-life performance.

Why Iowa and Pocono Became Standout Tracks

Despite updates such as repaving at these circuits, Byron feels his early experiences racing on iRacing continue to serve him well.

“And even with repaves and everything, I feel like I just spent so much time as a 14-year-old, 13-year-old just racing on iRacing on Iowa and Pocono,”

he said.

Byron noted,

“I feel like those tracks in the summer, it honestly lines up pretty good. Those are usually our fastest tracks.”

This combination of early virtual training and track pace has contributed significantly to his continued success at Iowa Speedway and similar venues.

From Simulator to Real-Life Triumphs

William Byron’s journey from a young iRacing enthusiast to a multiple-series winner at Iowa showcases the increasing value of realistic simulators in driver development. The countless hours behind the computer screen not only helped sharpen his racing instincts but also prepared him mentally and physically for professional competition.

As iRacing continues to grow as a platform, Byron’s achievements demonstrate its potential to groom future champions, blending virtual practice with real-life racing achievements at prominent tracks like Iowa Speedway and Pocono Raceway.
