Byron Buxton's no-trade clause thwarts Padres' ambitions; remains committed to staying with the Minnesota Twins.

As the MLB trade deadline approached, the San Diego Padres actively sought to strengthen their roster, pursuing multiple player acquisitions. Despite contacting several teams, their attempt to trade for Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton was stalled due to Buxton’s no-trade clause embedded in his current contract.

Teams’ Interest in Buxton Faces Contractual Roadblocks

The Padres’ general manager, A.J. Preller, reached out to the Twins about Buxton, a two-time All-Star and one of the league’s premier centerfielders. However, the no-trade clause, part of Buxton’s seven-year, $100 million contract signed in 2021, prevented Minnesota from entertaining trade discussions involving him.

This will surprise no one who’s followed A.J. Preller’s career, but the Padres were one of the teams that called about Buxton,

said MLB insider Dennis Lin, highlighting the Padres’ ongoing interest in the player.

In addition to San Diego, several other teams expressed interest in acquiring Buxton. Yet, he remained firm in refusing to waive his protection, asserting his desire to continue playing for the Twins.

Buxton’s Determined Position Amid Persistent Trade Talks

According to Dan Hayes of The Athletic, at least six teams contacted Buxton’s agent, B.B. Abbott, exploring trade possibilities both before and during July, when it was uncertain whether the Twins would be sellers or buyers at the deadline.

Multiple sources confirmed at least six teams contacted Buxton’s agent, B.B. Abbott, about the possibility, including early in July before it was clear whether the Twins would be buyers or sellers,

noted Hayes. During an All-Star game media session on July 14, Buxton addressed rumors about a potential trade and stated clearly that he planned to remain a Twin permanently, protected by his no-trade clause.

Current Health and Performance Status of Buxton

Buxton is presently on Minnesota’s 10-day injured list, sidelined due to inflammation in his left ribcage. Despite this injury, his performance over the current season continues to attract league-wide attention, reflecting one of the strongest campaigns in his 11-year major league career.

The Padres’ aggressive trade pursuits face a critical obstacle as Buxton’s contract terms preserve his position with the Twins. Nevertheless, as the trade deadline nears, teams will remain vigilant in their efforts to improve rosters before the window closes.
