Jake Bird’s rough start lands him in Triple-A, but Yankees stay confident in bullpen boost for playoff run
Jake Bird's Triple-A stint aims to revitalize Yankees' bullpen for a crucial postseason surge amidst early struggles.

The New York Yankees have made key adjustments to their bullpen, aiming to bolster their pitching depth as the playoff race intensifies. At the trade deadline, the team acquired relievers David Bednar, Camilo Doval, and Jake Bird to strengthen their late-inning options. While Bednar and Doval were expected to handle high-pressure situations, Bird was slated for middle relief duties, potentially covering the fifth or sixth innings.

Jake Bird’s Early Struggles Result in Demotion

Jake Bird’s initial outings with the Yankees have been disappointing. In just three appearances, he recorded a 27.00 ERA, giving up seven runs—six of them earned—in only two innings pitched, including surrendering two home runs. Due to these struggles, the Yankees decided to option Bird to their Triple-A affiliate for a period of adjustment and rebuilding confidence.

Manager Aaron Boone provided insight into Bird’s situation, saying,

“I think with Birdy, and I told him this last night, he had been struggling a little bit before he got to us,”

and added,

“Part of it was just that he’s been used a lot. It feels like he could use a little bit of a reset. We think he’s really good, and we think he’s not only going to be good for us, hopefully, the rest of this year, but moving forward after this year, too.”

Boone’s comments suggest optimism that a brief stint in Triple-A will help Bird regain his form.

Yankees Maintain Faith in Bullpen Reinforcements

Despite Bird’s slow start, the Yankees remain confident in his ability to contribute to their bullpen in the near future. Boone emphasized that the demotion is meant to help Bird restore his pitching effectiveness rather than reflect a loss of faith in his talent. The team anticipates that Bird could return to the major league roster as they continue their postseason preparation.

General Manager Brian Cashman also expressed assurance about the bullpen’s improvement, noting,

“Just keeping it simple, we are better today than we were yesterday. So, mission accomplished there… I’m looking forward to these players competing in a really difficult market against some really high-end teams.”

His remarks underline the organization’s belief that the restructured bullpen will enhance the Yankees’ competitiveness.

Team Challenges and Future Outlook

Since June 1, the Yankees have struggled to find consistency, holding a 25-31 record during that period. Nonetheless, Boone remains confident in the team‘s potential, acknowledging his responsibility to guide the players toward fulfilling that promise. He reflected,

“The difficult thing for me is I really feel like we potentially have such a good team right now, and we haven’t been able to put it together,”

and added,

“A big part of that is on me. I got to help set the tone to put these guys in a position to help realize their potential.”

Boone further stressed his conviction that this roster could be one of the best he has managed recently, stating,

“We’ve got to go. I do absolutely believe that we have that run in us. Talk is cheap; this is just on paper right now, it’s got to happen.”

Yankees Positioned for a Playoff Fight

Currently holding a 60-53 record, the Yankees sit third in the AL East and share the second Wild Card spot. The team remains committed to utilizing their revamped bullpen as a core strength in their pursuit of postseason success. Despite the uncertain start for Jake Bird, the organization’s belief in his potential impact signifies that he is still an important part of their bullpen strategy going forward.
