Despite Mookie Betts’ Dodgers Slump, Manager Dave Roberts Stands Firm: “He’s the Best Option”
Mookie Betts continues slump, going hitless in 20 plate appearances, yet retains Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts' unwavering trust.

Mookie Betts is currently experiencing a significant offensive slump with the LA Dodgers, having gone hitless in his last 20 plate appearances over five games. Despite this stretch, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts remains confident in Betts’ ability to rebound and continue contributing to the team’s success. Roberts recently decided to move Shohei Ohtani back into the leadoff spot, pushing Betts down to the No. 2 spot in the batting order, yet has dismissed any talk of further demotions for the former MVP.

Addressing the concerns on Monday, Roberts emphatically stated his trust in Betts, saying,

“I’m going to continue to believe in him and trust that he’s the best option.”

Near Breakout Hit Denied by Cardinals’ Defensive Play

During the Dodgers’ series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals, Mookie Betts almost ended his hitless streak but was thwarted by a remarkable defensive play. The game was tied 2-2 heading into the ninth inning when Yohel Pozo hit a go-ahead single for the Cardinals. In the bottom of the final inning, Lars Nootbaar made a stunning diving catch to prevent Betts from securing a critical hit that could have sparked a late rally.

If Nootbaar’s catch had not succeeded, Shohei Ohtani, who was on first base, might have advanced to home to tie the game. Instead, the Cardinals maintained their lead and preserved the victory, prolonging Betts’ offensive drought.

Personal Loss Affects Betts During Challenging Period

Adding to the difficulties faced by Betts, he missed the Dodgers’ Friday game last week due to the passing of his stepfather. He traveled to Nashville to support his mother and siblings during this difficult time. Speaking to reporters, Betts shared the emotional impact of the loss, saying,

“My stepdad passed, So I needed to go home, be with my mom, somebody that’s been there in my life from fourth grade until now. So, that was tough for me and the family, but I just needed to be there for my mom and my brothers and sisters.”

“So, it’s just a tough time, and there’s no real way to really explain something like that outside of just being there and spending time with the family.”

Betts returned to Boston late Saturday and appeared as a pinch-hitter, although he struck out in that at-bat.

Outlook for Betts and the Dodgers Moving Forward

Mookie Betts’ offensive slump, compounded by personal tragedy, has created a challenging environment for both the player and the Dodgers. Despite these setbacks, Dave Roberts’ continued support suggests the team values Betts’ experience and potential impact. The adjustment in the batting lineup reflects efforts to spark better offensive production while maintaining faith in Betts as a key figure. How Betts will respond in the coming games remains crucial, as the Dodgers seek to maintain their competitive edge in the season.
