Steelers Eye Terry McLaurin Trade Proposal to Fix WR2 Crisis Ahead of Preseason Game
Steelers consider trading Roman Wilson and draft pick for Terry McLaurin to reinforce wide receiver lineup amidst injuries.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are confronting a critical situation as their first preseason game nears, dealing with multiple injuries to important players during recent practice sessions. Linebacker Alex Highsmith, cornerback Joey Porter Jr., and wide receiver Calvin Austin III were either sidelined or limited because of injuries, with Austin’s condition raising particular concerns about the team‘s wide receiver depth.

Wide Receiver Depth Takes a Hit with Austin’s Injury

Calvin Austin III had been expected to step into the role of the team‘s second wide receiver, but his injury casts serious doubt on his availability. This development leaves the Steelers vulnerable at WR2, especially since second-year receiver Roman Wilson has yet to secure a significant role. The alternatives, including veterans Scotty Miller and Robert Woods, are unlikely to intimidate opposing defenses, making the position a major weak point heading into the season.

Trade Rumors Surface Around Superstar Receiver Terry McLaurin

To address this vulnerability, the Steelers have been linked to Washington Commanders star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The latest proposal surfaced from Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, who suggested the Steelers could trade Roman Wilson and a 2026 third-round pick to the Commanders in exchange for McLaurin. Such a move would instantly upgrade Pittsburgh’s receiving corps and potentially elevate the team’s status as a Super Bowl contender.

“For more than a year, there have been questions surrounding the WR2 position,”

DeFabo wrote.

“Right now, the team seems interested in seeing how two receivers on rookie contracts — Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson — fill that role. McLaurin would be an instant and massive upgrade, signaling the Steelers really are ‘all in’ for Rodgers. The veteran WR also could help at the beginning of a rookie QB window on a short, two-year extension worth $30 million per year.”

Challenges Behind Acquiring McLaurin for the Steelers

While adding McLaurin would be a major boost, the trade is complicated by several factors. Though McLaurin has requested a trade and requires a new contract, the Washington Commanders might not agree to the proposed package involving Wilson and a future draft pick. Additionally, the financial demands of bringing in McLaurin are significant; at over $30 million per year, his salary would considerably strain the Steelers’ already tight salary cap situation.

Pittsburgh’s general manager, Omar Khan, is known for making bold moves despite financial challenges, but integrating McLaurin’s contract could prove difficult within the current payroll constraints, despite the clear talent upgrade it would provide.

The Steelers’ Urgency to Strengthen Their Receiving Group

The Steelers are clearly running out of patience with their offensive weapons, having invested in the quarterback and overall team improvements with the expectation of competing for a Super Bowl. After assessing their existing receivers, the organization recognizes the need for another impactful player to stabilize the passing game.

Although acquiring Terry McLaurin may not materialize exactly as proposed, another move for a solid wide receiver is expected soon. The urgency reflects the Steelers’ desire to support their offensive scheme as they head into the preseason and beyond.
