Trevor Lawrence Sees Big Strides in Jaguars Training Camp, Ready to Elevate 2025 Season

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence expressed optimism about his development during the ongoing 2025 training camp at the Miller Electric Center. While not fully satisfied with the offense’s practice session on Tuesday, Lawrence emphasized the significant improvements he has made so far under first-year Head Coach Liam Coen’s offensive system.

Entering his fifth season as the Jaguars‘ starting quarterback, Lawrence praised the strides he has achieved in mastering Coen’s scheme, highlighting both his growing comfort with the system and his ability to execute plays more quickly and effectively.

Adjusting to a New Offensive System and Sharpening Fundamentals

Lawrence pointed out that his improvements span multiple areas, including processing progressions faster and anticipating throws better, especially in the middle of the field. He commented,

“I think I’ve made some big strides from the spring,”

signaling his confidence in the upward trajectory of his performance.

He added,

“The system, being comfortable, playing fast, getting through progressions, letting it rip, especially across the middle, and anticipating some throws.”

This illustrates Lawrence’s focus on mastering the nuances of Coen’s offense, which demands precise timing and footwork.

Despite calling Tuesday’s practice

“a little bit of a rougher day”

for himself and the offense, Lawrence remained encouraged by the overall development and growing familiarity with the system. He emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, stating,

“It’s been a lot better than the spring. Going into today, I was pleased with just my progress. Not necessarily overall performance, but I felt like I was really just playing better every day, and I think that’s what you want to do.”

Mastering Footwork to Thrive Within the Offense

A key element of Lawrence’s growth involves adapting his footwork to meet the demands of the new offensive playbook. This focus has been a major priority during recent months, and Lawrence indicated that his footwork is becoming more natural. He explained,

“Footwork is becoming more natural, tying my feet with my eyes and then just seeing the concepts because I’ve seen them now three or four times installed.”

He also noted the benefit of repetition in practice, which helps him anticipate what defenders will do and allows him to make plays more quickly. However, Lawrence acknowledged that some muscle memory from previous habits still lingers, requiring ongoing adjustment during individual and team drills. He concluded on this aspect with,

“We’ve made some good progress, but there’s a lot more work to do.”

Versatile Rookie Travis Hunter Expands Role in Camp

In addition to Lawrence’s developments, Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter took a significant step by practicing on both offense and defense for the first time at the 2025 training camp on Tuesday. Previously, Hunter had focused exclusively on one side of the ball during practices.

Hunter, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, played nine snaps on offense and nine on defense during the session, and recorded two receptions. Offensive Coordinator Liam Coen hinted that Hunter’s dual-role participation might become a regular feature, stating,

“It might not be every single day, but I would say it would probably be a little bit more normal than not.”

Coen added that the team wanted to get Hunter more reps after the recent stadium scrimmage to accelerate his development on both sides of the ball.

Preseason Debut and Strategic Decisions Await Jaguars

As the Jaguars prepare for their preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers scheduled for Saturday at EverBank Stadium, Head Coach Liam Coen confirmed that final decisions on playing time are still pending. Coen said that the coaching staff would use Tuesday and Wednesday’s padded practices to evaluate the team’s readiness before naming starters.

Coen also revealed plans to coordinate with Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin to align on how to manage player usage during the game. He noted,

“We’re touching base [Tuesday] at some point here to just get on the same page about what they’re doing, what we’d like to do ultimately.”

The decision on starters and game plans will be finalized later in the week following these discussions.

Lawrence’s Vision for the Jaguars’ Potential in 2025

Looking ahead to the full season, Trevor Lawrence expressed genuine belief in the team’s talent and coaching staff. He acknowledged the need for the offense and defense to tighten their execution and chemistry but remained hopeful about their prospects. Lawrence said,

“This can be a really good team. I think we’re talented. Our schemes are really good. We’re well-coached. We’re still getting better and dialing in on the details, and we need to play cleaner and be better operationally and just gel more as units, but I really think – not to be cliché – the sky is the limit for this team.”

He emphasized that confidence needs to be backed by performance on the field, adding,

“You can’t speak on the results because we have to go out and do it and we have to perform, but I really feel confident that we’ll be prepared come September, the first game. We’ll be ready to play. We’ve got a lot of work to do until then, though. Camp’s a long time.”

As the Jaguars continue refining their approach and players like Lawrence and Hunter grow into their roles, the 2025 season holds significant promise. The progress observed during training camp sets a hopeful tone for the franchise’s future as they aim to build momentum and deliver strong performances in the NFL.
