Israel Adesanya, the former UFC middleweight champion, is aiming to return to the Octagon following a difficult run of three consecutive losses. His most recent defeat occurred in February when rising contender Nassourdine Imavov knocked him out, marking the first time Adesanya has experienced such a losing streak in his career.
At 36 years old, questions linger among fans about whether Adesanya will fight again, given his past dominance and numerous accomplishments in mixed martial arts. Despite these doubts, Adesanya is motivated to make a comeback and continue competing in the sport.
Considering a Rematch with Paulo Costa, a Rival from His Championship Days
Although Adesanya’s recent performances have been challenging, he has shown glimpses of his previous form, coming close to reclaiming the title in his fight against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 305. While he acknowledges it may be unrealistic to expect an immediate return to the championship scene, Adesanya has mentioned the possibility of facing a familiar rival who he once defeated convincingly.
During his reign as the 185-pound champion, Adesanya dominated much of the middleweight division, including a victory over Paulo Costa. Costa has since admitted to sabotaging a crucial fight in his career by drinking a bottle of wine beforehand, which contributed to his knockout loss against Adesanya.

Following his loss to Imavov, Adesanya took an extended break from training and only returned to full sparring sessions in April, working with former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in Miami.
I sparred with Kamaru in Miami when (Alexander Volkanovski) got his belt back. And that was my first sparring back. I took some time out to just, you know, chill and let the brain relax. And yeah, I just knew straight away. So I’ve been itchy for a while bro, I’m ready to go,
Adesanya told the Sun Sport.
Regarding a potential fight with Costa, Adesanya expressed openness to granting him a chance to redeem himself while also remaining receptive to other opponents like Sean Strickland.
I don’t have to say much. I’d be like, ‘Cool, alright, that sounds fun’ and give him a chance at redemption like people have done for me as well. And Strickland, if he wants to fight, sure, if not, it’s alright,
Adesanya added.
Paulo Costa’s Recent Victory Signals His Return to Form
Paulo Costa, nicknamed ‘The Eraser,’ has not been very active lately but made a notable return at UFC 318 by securing an impressive win over Roman Kopylov. This victory was significant as it marked Costa’s comeback to winning ways after a series of setbacks.
After Costa’s success, Adesanya acknowledged his former rival’s achievement, setting aside their past rivalry and showing respect for the Brazilian fighter’s performance.
The Path Forward for Israel Adesanya
Israel Adesanya’s plans for a comeback highlight the fighter’s resilience and desire to compete despite recent setbacks. With the potential rematch fight against Paulo Costa on the horizon, fans may soon witness a dynamic showdown between two former middleweight contenders. Whether this bout happens or other opponents like Sean Strickland emerge, Adesanya’s return will be closely monitored as he attempts to reestablish himself in the UFC.
