Senior Leadership and Mentoring as Iowa Prepares for Upcoming Season

As Iowa’s women’s basketball team readies for the new campaign, senior players like Gyamfi are committed to guiding younger teammates and easing their transition into college basketball. Reflecting on her senior status, Gyamfi shared thoughtful insights with 247Sports:

“Weird how big of a jump it is to be a junior to a senior because now it’s like every day is like, oh, it’s my last 30th day back at practice. Like I won’t have this again next year. So it’s a different feeling, but I’m filled with a lot of gratitude.

“Every day I feel like I’m reminiscing a little bit on the past, but still just really happy to be here in the present. So it’s strange, and every time I introduce myself as Jada Gyamfi, senior from West Moines, Iowa, I’m like oh god, that’s crazy.”

Gyamfi’s leadership extends beyond the court. During the summer, she worked closely with incoming freshmen, not just teaching basketball skills but focusing on helping them feel supported in their new environment.

“I could teach them a couple of things about, you know, offense or whatever, but I mean that’s not what’s really going to last,” she added. “You’re only going to be here for four years. So what matters to me is that, you know, they feel comfortable.”

New additions to the team this season include five-star recruit Addie Deal and transfer Emely Rodriguez from the University of Central Florida, enhancing Iowa’s roster depth.

With Gyamfi’s continued dedication and the infusion of fresh talent, the Hawkeyes aim to build on their strengths as they approach the season ahead. Her role as both a leader and dependable teammate highlights the importance of mentorship and camaraderie within the team’s culture, setting a strong foundation for the challenges to come.
