Bills Coach Calls James Cook Contract Holdout ‘Pretty Easy’ Amid Training Camp Absence

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has continued his contract holdout during training camp, opting out of team drills while negotiating a new deal. The two-time Pro Bowler, who reportedly wants around $15 million per year, is pushing for a contract extension despite having attended the recent minicamp. Cook’s absence has generated attention as the Bills prepare for the upcoming season with Super Bowl aspirations.

Coach Joe Brady Adapts to Cook’s Training Camp Absence

Offensive coordinator Joe Brady addressed how the team is handling Cook’s absence during practices. Brady described the situation as manageable, comparing it to usual challenges like injuries among wide receivers. He emphasized the coaching staff’s responsibility to work with the players available on the field and adjust the game plan accordingly.

“It’s pretty easy right now just because [its] no different as the wide receivers with some of the injuries,”

Brady said.

“It’s our job as coaches to coach who’s out there and as long as there’s 11 guys, we’re going to run the scheme and we’re going to roll with it. You guys know how I feel about James and the love I have for him, but all that’s out of my control in my hands. My job is to whether we got to go 22 personnel, whether we got to go 11 with injuries, people in and out, just roll with it, and it’s been great opportunity for a lot of guys.”

Implications of Cook’s Holdout for the Team’s Preparation

While Brady remains unfazed, Cook’s holdout does present challenges for Buffalo’s ground game. The running back’s absence means missing vital reps and conditioning during a critical stage of team preparation. This could affect his readiness to contribute fully once the regular season begins, given how significant his role is within the Bills’ offense.

The Outlook for Cook and the Bills as the Season Approaches

Despite the ongoing contract dispute, the coaching staff is focused on maximizing the potential of players attending camp. Brady’s comments suggest that the team is prepared to move forward without disruption, remaining optimistic about integrating Cook back into the lineup whenever he returns. The timing of Cook’s return remains uncertain, but his impact on Buffalo’s Super Bowl hopes will be closely watched as the season nears.
