Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch recently named Chris Buescher and AJ Allmendinger as the most underrated drivers currently competing in the sport. Busch, who races for Richard Childress Racing and holds the record for most wins by an active driver with 63 victories, shared his perspective in an interview with Jeff Gluck published on The Athletic.
With a strong track record that includes appearances in the Championship 4 every year from 2015 to 2019 and two Cup Series titles, Busch’s opinion carries significant weight within the NASCAR community. This year, when asked who he believed was the most underrated driver, Busch highlighted these two seasoned competitors.
Insight into AJ Allmendinger’s Underrated Talent
Kyle Busch expressed high regard for AJ Allmendinger, emphasizing his consistent performance and skill behind the wheel. Busch said,
“There’s two. I would probably say Chris Buescher is one of them. And then I’d also go with AJ Allmendinger,”
and added,
“I think AJ is really, really good. Being (alliance) teammates with the Kaulig guys and stuff like that, and knowing where he’s at and what he’s doing and how he’s driving with similar stuff as us — I think he’s getting a lot out of his cars.”
Currently, Allmendinger ranks 18th in the NASCAR standings. He is a two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion with multiple appearances in the Cup Series winner’s circle, his most recent victory coming in 2021 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Chris Buescher’s Achievements and Recognition
Chris Buescher, who stands 11th in the present Cup Series standings, boasts a notable career including championships in both the ARCA Racing Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. He has also earned multiple wins in the Cup Series, with the latest triumph at Watkins Glen in September 2024. Busch’s endorsement highlights Buescher’s ongoing competitiveness and consistent race craft.
Why Recognizing Underrated Drivers Matters
Kyle Busch’s acknowledgement of Buescher and Allmendinger sheds light on drivers who may not always receive widespread attention despite their strong performances. Recognizing such talent draws focus to the depth of skill and competition within NASCAR beyond the most prominent names. As the 2025 season progresses, both Buescher and Allmendinger remain drivers to watch closely, with potential to influence championship outcomes.
