McLaren Driver Alex Dunne Sparks Potential Bidding War Among F1 Teams Ahead of 2027 Debut
McLaren driver program member, Alex Dunne, impresses in F1 FP1, sparking interest from midfield teams for future seats.

Alex Dunne, a McLaren driver, has emerged as a rising star in motorsport, attracting significant interest from various Formula 1 teams as he approaches a likely debut in 2027. The Irish driver’s rapid progress during the 2025 Formula 2 season, combined with his strong showing during free practice sessions, has placed him firmly on the radar of top F1 outfits.

Before the 2025 season began, Dunne was relatively unknown, having finished 14th in the previous Formula 3 standings. However, after advancing to Formula 2 with Rodin Motorsport, the 19-year-old has impressed by securing fifth place in the championship with four race weekends remaining, trailing leader Leonardo Fornaroli by 30 points. Dunne’s pace and consistency have exceeded expectations, showcasing his potential to compete at higher levels.

Performance Highlights and Driver Development

Dunne’s profile was further elevated during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend when he replaced Lando Norris in the FP1 session for McLaren. Despite being his first Formula 1 free practice appearance, Dunne finished in fourth position, just about one-tenth of a second behind the world championship leader, Oscar Piastri. Such a result is remarkable given that junior drivers often rank near the back of the pack in similar sessions.

This performance demonstrated Dunne’s ability to handle the pressures and demands of Formula 1 machinery, strengthening his case as a promising candidate for future F1 seats. Still, he faces challenges, particularly regarding driving with controlled aggression, as time penalties have hindered his overall points tally this season.

Future Prospects and Potential Team Interests

While Dunne is keen to make his Formula 1 debut as soon as possible, the scarcity of available seats in 2026 reduces the likelihood of an immediate promotion. Instead, he is expected to continue refining his skills in Formula 2 for another year before targeting a full-time drive in 2027. Several midfield teams, including Alpine, Haas, and Audi, could present opportunities depending on contract renewals and driver movements.

Given the increasing buzz surrounding Dunne’s performances and his status as a member of the McLaren Driver Development Programme, it is anticipated that multiple teams will compete for his signature. His ability to combine raw speed with the need for maturity on track marks him as one of the standout prospects of his generation.
