Lucas Glover Defends Rory McIlroy’s Controversial 2025 FedEx St. Jude Withdrawal: “It’s His Choice”
Lucas Glover supports Rory McIlroy's decision to withdraw, emphasizing the golfer's right to choose what's best for him.

Rory McIlroy’s decision to withdraw from the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship, a major event on the PGA Tour featuring the top 70 players in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), has sparked widespread discussion. While many have criticized the withdrawal, Lucas Glover publicly defended McIlroy’s right to make the choice. Glover emphasized that McIlroy’s absence will affect the tournament and its sponsors but insisted that the golfer has the freedom to decide whether to participate.

Speaking on Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio, Glover highlighted the independent status of golfers and the personal nature of such decisions. He acknowledged the repercussions McIlroy’s withdrawal could have while underscoring that no external pressure should override the player’s autonomy.

Lucas Glover Explains Why McIlroy’s Withdrawal Is Justified

Lucas Glover explained his position clearly, stating:

“He can do whatever he wants, and you know, nobody can really say anything. Is it unfortunate for the tour? Yes. Is it unfortunate for the tournament? Yes. Is it unfortunate for the sponsor? Yes. But Rory’s got to do what’s best for Rory, and Rory’s played a lot of golf. He’s going to play a lot of golf after this. I understand all that.”

He elaborated further on the situation:

“Do I wish he were here? Sure. I know the tournament does. I know the sponsors do. I know TV does. All of that stuff. But with the current setup, they can’t really say anything, because it’s his choice. And you know, it should be, because we are technically independent contractors. But I do think now that the precedent is set, there’s also now reason to maybe address this going forward.”

Glover’s remarks reflect the current landscape in professional golf, where players are contractors rather than employees, allowing them to choose their schedules freely despite the impact on tournaments and sponsors.

Rory McIlroy Cites Busy Season as Reason for Withdrawal

In an interview with The Telegraph, Rory McIlroy revealed that one reason for his withdrawal was the demanding nature of his 2025 season. McIlroy described the year as hectic and explained that his decision stemmed from a desire to manage his schedule better, especially after underperforming at the same tournament the previous year. His withdrawal is seen as an effort to balance workload and maintain his long-term form.

McIlroy Commits to Compete in the DP World Tour Later in 2025

After his unexpected exit from the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Rory McIlroy surprised fans by confirming his participation in the DP World Tour Championship scheduled for November 2025. The event, held at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, UAE, will feature McIlroy as a competitor. His record in Dubai is notable, with six Race to Dubai titles under his belt.

The DP World Tour highlighted McIlroy’s accomplishments in a recent post, underscoring his success in the region. The 2025 season for McIlroy has been mixed; he secured a win at the season-opening major, completing his career grand slam, but struggled notably during the PGA Championship and the RBC Canadian Open, missing the cut in the latter.

Implications of McIlroy’s Withdrawal and Future Considerations

McIlroy’s withdrawal from a high-profile tournament like the FedEx St. Jude Championship has multifaceted consequences, affecting the event’s competitiveness, sponsor interests, and the viewing experience. However, Glover’s defense of McIlroy highlights the evolving nature of professional golf, where players exercise increased control over their schedules. This case may prompt governing bodies and tour organizers to revisit and possibly revise policies regarding player commitments in the future.

As McIlroy prepares to compete in the DP World Tour Championship, fans and stakeholders will watch closely to see how his choices impact his performance and the broader golf landscape moving forward.
