Darryl Strawberry Cheers Pete Alonso’s Bid to Break Mets Home Run Record After 35 Years

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is on the verge of setting a new franchise home run record, holding 251 career home runs exclusively with the Mets. The 30-year-old slugger needs just one more homer to surpass Darryl Strawberry’s long-standing mark of 252, which has stood for 35 years. Alonso’s pursuit of this milestone has captured the attention of fans and former players alike, highlighting both his talent and persistence within the organization.

Darryl Strawberry Welcomes the Record Being Broken

Darryl Strawberry, the Mets legend whose home run record Alonso is about to eclipse, spoke candidly about the impending achievement during an interview on August 7 before a Mets Double-A game. Strawberry acknowledged the significance of his 35-year-old mark but expressed no resistance toward seeing it broken.

“You’re talking about a record that’s been there for 35 years, that’s a long time, and records are meant to be broken,”

he said, emphasizing that players should expect their records to eventually fall.

Strawberry continued,

“I think too many players [who] played professional sports always think their records should stand and no one should break [them], and that’s not true. There are going to be players that come along that will break their record, and I’m happy for Pete. Because he’s a good guy.”

He also praised Alonso’s character, noting,

“He’s not one of the bad guys in baseball. He’s a guy that loves playing in New York, and hopefully he’ll achieve it soon.”

Recognition of Alonso’s Poise Under Pressure

Strawberry highlighted Alonso’s ability to perform under the intense scrutiny that comes with playing in New York, which is known as one of the most demanding baseball markets.

“He’s been able to stand up and play in New York in front of the pressure and the expectations, which is very hard to do, I think a lot of times people don’t realize that,”

Strawberry said. He also drew a parallel between his own and Alonso’s development, both being homegrown talents who rose through the Mets organization.

“When you’ve been developed through the organization like young players, you want to do well. He’s been able to do that, so very pleased with all of that he’s about to accomplish.”

Alonso’s Path Forward and Impact on Mets History

Despite a recent dip in offensive performance, Alonso is expected to match or surpass Strawberry’s home run figure by the end of August. Achieving this record will solidify Alonso’s place among Mets legends and provide inspiration for future players within the franchise. Strawberry’s public support reflects a passing of the torch and a recognition of Alonso’s impact on the team. As the Mets continue their season, fans and players alike will be watching eagerly to see Alonso claim this historic honor.
