Jalin Hyatt, now known for his standout performance with the Tennessee Volunteers, initially committed to Virginia Tech before changing course. His decision to switch to Tennessee was largely influenced by former Vols wide receivers coach and Tennessee legend Tee Martin, who was an assistant on Rocky Top during Hyatt’s recruitment process. This shift highlights the significant role of personal connections and mentorship in college football recruitment.
How Martin’s Persistence and Vision Impacted Hyatt
In a detailed interview with Saturday Down South, Hyatt explained the pivotal influence Martin had on him. Although Hyatt was committed to Virginia Tech under then-head coach Jeremy Pruitt, Martin continued reaching out even after Hyatt’s commitment. Martin highlighted the unique atmosphere at Tennessee, including the passionate fan base and the excitement of playing in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), which resonates deeply with aspiring players. Hyatt recalled how these factors, combined with Martin’s belief in Tennessee’s potential for greatness, eventually convinced him to switch commitments.
“Before I committed to Tennessee, I was actually committed to Virginia Tech,”
Hyatt said.
“During that process, at that time, it was Jeremy Pruitt as our head coach. Tee Martin was our wide receivers coach at that time before he took the job with the Ravens. When I committed (to Virginia Tech), Coach Tee Martin, he always called me — even after I committed to Virginia Tech. He called me, he’s like, ‘Man, we need you here’. And over time, he just sold me with how the University of Tennessee, with the fans, the game day experience, the SEC vibes of playing college football — everybody wants to be in the SEC. And not only that, I felt like just with Tennessee at that time, once they wanted to be great, I knew what Tennessee can bring out. And my junior year (the 2022 season) when we played, it showed. Just with the fans, I remember going to — we had a game against LSU over there in Baton Rouge, and it was just all orange. Things like that is the reason why you want to go to the University of Tennessee.”

Legacy Beyond Coaching Tenure
Tee Martin was no longer on Tennessee’s coaching staff during Hyatt’s breakthrough 2022 season, having moved on to a role with the Baltimore Ravens. Despite this, Martin’s early encouragement and efforts to sell the Tennessee program to Hyatt laid the essential groundwork for Hyatt’s success. Martin’s influence demonstrates the lasting impact a coach can have on recruiting and shaping a player’s career trajectory well beyond their active time on a team’s staff.

The Broader Impact on Tennessee Football
Hyatt’s decision to join Tennessee and subsequent breakout season underline the importance of strong recruitment relationships and the appeal of the SEC’s competitive environment. As Tennessee continues to build its program and maintain momentum, the foundational efforts of figures like Tee Martin remain critical to attracting and developing top talent, signaling a promising future for the Volunteers on the national stage.
