Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown has faced some of the greatest wing players of modern basketball, but he recently revealed an unexpected name as the toughest player he’s had to guard. In a live stream on Friday, Brown surprised audiences by naming Marco Belinelli, rather than the usual top-tier stars, as his most challenging defensive assignment.
Brown’s Unique Experience Guarding Marco Belinelli
During the live discussion with streamer PlaqueBoyMax, Brown described why Belinelli, a former NBA wing known for his relentless movement, presented such a difficult defensive puzzle. Brown recalled,
“Marco Belinelli used to light me up,”
and added,
“He just used to never stop moving. And I used to have to chase him around (in) the system we had. I used to chase Marco Belinelli around all these different screens. And like, he’s not even getting the ball … (but) you never know when he’s about to take off full speed, and start running and catch the ball.”
This relentless motion and unpredictability forced Brown to constantly stay alert and expend extra energy on defense.
Belinelli’s Career Since NBA and Brown’s Defensive Reputation
Belinelli last appeared in the NBA in 2020 with the San Antonio Spurs and has since continued his career overseas with Italy’s Virtus Bologna. This shift has likely lessened the frequency of defensive battles between the two players. Meanwhile, Brown has maintained his reputation as an elite defender since entering the league, finishing 10th in Defensive Player of the Year voting during his second season at age 21.
Changing Defensive Role as Brown’s Offensive Responsibilities Grow
While Brown’s offensive skills have blossomed, making him a focal point of the Celtics’ attack, his nightly defensive intensity has varied since his rookie years. This seems less a decline in effort and more a reflection of his evolving role on the team, where scoring has become a higher priority. However, Brown has demonstrated the ability to elevate his defensive presence when it matters most, especially notable in the 2024 NBA Finals while guarding Luka Dončić.
Looking Ahead: Defense Amidst Growing Offensive Load
As Brown prepares to carry an even heavier offensive workload in the 2025-26 season, it is unlikely his regular season defense will consistently match the ferocity of earlier years. Yet, with Belinelli retired from the NBA, there are few current players Brown acknowledges as particularly daunting when he defends them. His comments highlight the complexity and challenges defenders face, especially when tasked with guarding players who thrive on movement and unpredictability.
