Warriors Eye Complex Josh Giddey-Jonathan Kuminga Trade Amid Contract Standoff

The Golden State Warriors are currently in a public stalemate with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga regarding a new contract offer. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bulls are facing a similar situation with Josh Giddey, although their negotiations have remained private. Both teams appear to be stalled in securing long-term deals with these promising players during the 2023 offseason.

Warriors Consider Giddey-Kuminga Sign-and-Trade as Possible Solution

Amid these contract impasses, the Warriors have shown at least some openness to exploring a trade involving Kuminga and Giddey. NBA insider Jake Fischer revealed during a Bleacher Report live stream that Golden State is among the teams interested in Giddey and is contemplating a sign-and-trade deal involving both players.

“I can report that there have been multiple teams that have reached out to Josh Giddey’s representation about having interest in [him]. Golden State is one of them. Golden State would be interested, depending on how the machinations would go, in some kind of Josh Giddey/Jonathan Kuminga sign-and-trade, to my understanding.”

Bulls Currently Reject Trade Attempts; Past Interest in Kuminga Exists

Despite the Warriors’ willingness, the Chicago Bulls have so far declined all inquiries regarding a sign-and-trade involving Giddey. Fischer noted that although the Bulls are uninterested in this deal at present, there had been previous conversations between Chicago and Golden State concerning Kuminga. These discussions came up when the Bulls evaluated trades involving Zach LaVine and Alex Caruso.

“They made outreach to Golden State early in the offseason about Kuminga, they’ve talked about Kuminga in various trade conversations with the Warriors in the past when Golden State was checking in on Zach LaVine and Alex Caruso.”

Trade Complexity Poses Major Obstacles

One of the primary challenges facing a Giddey-Kuminga deal is the intricate nature of NBA salary rules, especially the base year compensation rule. In a double sign-and-trade, outgoing salaries count as 50 percent for the original team but the full amount for the receiving team, complicating matching salaries for a straight swap between two teams. Because of this, any deal would likely require the involvement of at least three or four teams to satisfy league requirements and salary cap rules.

For instance, if Kuminga were to sign a $20 million per season contract, Golden State’s books would reflect only $10 million as outgoing salary, while the Bulls would record the full $20 million as incoming salary. The converse applies to Giddey’s salary. Navigating this discrepancy makes a direct exchange between Golden State and Chicago improbable without additional teams joining the trade.

Warriors Withdrawing from Trade Talks, Contract Standoff Continues

Reports indicate that the Warriors have currently stepped back from all talks to trade Kuminga and are preparing for him to remain on the roster this upcoming season. Golden State has offered Kuminga a two-year, $45 million contract, which reportedly includes a team option for the second year and requires him to waive his no-trade clause. This clause would otherwise activate with the contract since it functions essentially as a one-year deal, risking Kuminga’s Bird rights in the process. So far, Kuminga has been unwilling to relinquish this leverage in negotiations.

Deadlines Approach, Resolution Expected Closer to Training Camp

The deadline to finalize a contract is October 1, the final day Kuminga can accept a $7.8 million qualifying offer and still become a free agent the next summer. Because this date is still weeks away, neither the Warriors nor Kuminga feel immediate pressure to compromise. Similarly, Giddey’s negotiations with the Bulls have also yet to reach a critical stage. Analysts expect both contract situations to be resolved nearer to the start of training camp rather than before.

Given the complexities and current stances, a direct Josh Giddey Jonathan Kuminga trade appears highly unlikely, highlighting how challenging it can be to find solutions that satisfy all parties in such multifaceted NBA contract scenarios.
