Jourdan Lewis Highlights Major Progress in Jaguars’ Secondary Ahead of 2024 Season

This offseason, the Jacksonville Jaguars reinforced their roster by adding experienced players to complement their youthful lineup, including former Dallas Cowboys defender Jourdan Lewis. As the team prepares for the 2024 season, Lewis emerges as a key figure in strengthening the Jaguars’ secondary, which has notably progressed during training camp under his influence.

Jourdan Lewis Discusses Defensive Improvements and Leadership Role

Jourdan Lewis, now the Jaguars’ starting nickelback, brings a wealth of experience from his extensive tenure in Dallas. He aims to inject leadership and strategic knowledge into a defense that struggled with consistency in recent seasons. Lewis believes the Jaguars’ defense has the potential to transform significantly, at minimum becoming an average unit, if not much better.

General manager James Gladstone praised Lewis’s presence, highlighting that even without the standout rookie Travis Hunter, the secondary shows promise as a potential strength, largely due to contributions from Lewis and other defensive players.

Reflecting on a recent practice, Lewis shared insights about the defense’s development. He emphasized how the defensive backs are becoming more in tune with defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile’s play calls, which allows them to anticipate and make impactful plays on the field.

We’re getting comfortable with how Coach Camp [Campanile] calls games and predicting where he wants to call different things and what he’s expecting,

Lewis said.

I think we’re getting comfortable with that and we’re just going out there trying to make plays.

Lewis expressed satisfaction with the team’s daily progress in practice, particularly in creating turnovers and disrupting opposing offenses.

I feel like we make a play on the ball every single day, and I really enjoy it. I think a lot of guys feel the same way about the defense,

Lewis said.

We’ll see what we do in the regular season, but as far as preseason right now and in camp, I think we’re doing a really good job.

Anticipating the Impact of Defensive Growth on the 2024 Season

If the positive momentum and progress seen during training camp continue into the regular season, the Jaguars’ defensive unit could become a vital asset in their bid to challenge for the AFC South title. Jourdan Lewis’s role as a veteran leader in the secondary is expected to be critical in maintaining and building on this defensive resurgence.
