Rockets Hesitant on Kevin Durant Max Extension Now, Future Talks Could Change the Game Next Season

The Houston Rockets acquired Kevin Durant earlier this season in a trade that sent Jalen Green to the Phoenix Suns. Since the trade, there has been talk about Kevin Durant’s intentions to extend his contract and possibly finish his career in Houston. However, current developments suggest that a Kevin Durant Rockets contract extension might not come easily this summer.

According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the Rockets are unlikely to offer Durant a maximum contract extension immediately, showing reluctance to fully commit to him at this stage. While the trade signaled a bold move, it appears the organization is cautious about sacrificing its long-term flexibility.

Rockets’ Calculated Approach to Kevin Durant’s Contract

On the latest episode of the Hoops Collective podcast, MacMahon shared his analysis of the Rockets’ strategy following the Durant trade. He explained that although Houston made a significant move by acquiring a veteran star, they did not “go all in” in the sense of jeopardizing future assets or financial flexibility. MacMahon noted that the package the Rockets gave up, including Jalen Green, was considered manageable given Green’s uncertain future and draft position.

“The Rockets to me… they’ve created a fascinating situation. But I agree, I think they’re as well-positioned to have a long run as any franchise other than Oklahoma City. Despite the fact that they just went all in, they didn’t go all in, they just made a trade to get Kevin Durant, who is going into year 18,”

MacMahon remarked.

He further elaborated,

“They did not go all in on the trade. They made a trade at a price that they were okay with, that did not sacrifice the long term. You know, Jalen Green was a second-round pick who didn’t really pan out. Um, you know, we talked when they made the trade, if you’re ranking the young players on the roster by future value, by long-term value, he might have been fifth or sixth on that list.”

MacMahon also highlighted that even recent high draft picks for the Rockets have not secured immediate roles, underscoring Houston’s cautious pace for integrating young talent and veterans alike.

“They didn’t really have like an immediate spot for the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft. Hell, they couldn’t squeeze the third overall pick in last year’s draft into the rotation,”

he added.

Uncertainty Surrounding a Max Extension for Durant

The Rockets’ reluctance to fully commit to a max contract extension for Kevin Durant this summer is an important point of discussion. As MacMahon summarized,

“The Rockets aren’t going to go all in. By all appearances and by what I’ve heard, they’re not going all in on an extension for Kevin Durant. Now, doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but you know, there’ve been rumblings of, hey, KD doesn’t, you know, he’s not going to push for the full max.”

He also indicated that the organization could proceed cautiously:

“Ummm, I don’t know that the Rockets are going to put anything on the table that’s close to the max. I think the Rockets are like it’s not ideal, but I don’t think they would panic if they go into the season with Kevin Durant just on the contract that he’s on, just on the expiring deal.”

This situation leaves Durant’s future in Houston somewhat unclear. He could potentially follow a path similar to Kawhi Leonard’s 2019 stint with the Toronto Raptors, where Leonard joined on a short-term deal, won a championship, and then departed in free agency. Durant’s willingness to stay or leave may hinge on both his success on the court and contractual negotiations.

Balancing Veteran Commitment Against Developing Young Talent

The Rockets also face the challenge of balancing investment in Kevin Durant with their young core, which includes players like Tari Eason and Amen Thompson heading into their own contract extensions over the next couple of years. The franchise must decide whether to dedicate major salary cap space to Durant’s potentially final years or preserve flexibility to retain and reward these emerging talents.

This balancing act is crucial as the Rockets look toward the 2025-26 season, which could be pivotal in defining the team’s trajectory. The organization’s decisions regarding Durant’s contract and player development will likely shape Houston’s competitiveness in the near future.

Alperen Sengun Minimizes Concern Over Durant’s Age

Amid these negotiations and speculation, Rockets forward Alperen Sengun has expressed confidence in Durant’s impact, dismissing worries about his advancing age. Sengun’s perspective suggests that within the team, Durant’s experience and talent remain highly valued despite approaching the later stages of his career.

How these dynamics unfold will be critical for both the Rockets and Kevin Durant as they navigate contract talks and competitive ambitions moving forward.
