Paddy Pimblett Eyes Ilia Topuria Fight Despite Admitting ‘More Deserving’ Contenders Ahead

Paddy Pimblett is setting his sights on a potential matchup with Ilia Topuria for the lightweight title, even though he acknowledges that other fighters might have stronger claims to the next shot. After his knockout of Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 in June, Pimblett is considering his future options amid a competitive division.

Pimblett first put himself into the picture by decisively defeating Michael Chandler via third-round TKO before immediately challenging Topuria, the current lightweight champion, after the latter’s title victory. Although Pimblett is ranked ninth at lightweight, he is confident about bypassing contenders like Arman Tsarukyan and Justin Gaethje to face the UFC’s pound-for-pound standout.

What Paddy Pimblett Said About His Upcoming Fight

During a vlog filmed in Las Vegas, where Pimblett watched his teammate compete at UFC Vegas 108, he gave fans an insight into his plans. The 30-year-old concluded his latest video with an update about his next potential bout, expressing hope that a fight with Topuria, nicknamed ‘The Chorizo,’ will take place later this year.

I have no idea. Hopefully, it is going to be me vs. ‘The Chorizo’ next,

Pimblett said about his UFC return.

He also noted the desire of many American fans for the fight to happen, explaining that several have asked him when he would “smash that sausage’s head in.” Pimblett acknowledged his ninth-place position in the rankings by admitting there are likely others more deserving but dismissed several contenders as unworthy of the opportunity.

Specifically targeting rivals, Pimblett said,

Spoiled rich baby trying to pay his way out of things. That’s why he quit when he was making weight in a bath like a little b—-. Arman’s irrelevant. No one cares about him.

He reserved respect for Justin Gaethje but commented on the latter’s apparent reluctance to face him, saying,

“I think the only fight to make is me and Ilia.”

Responding to Dan Hooker’s Comments

In addition to addressing the lightweight division, Pimblett fired back at Dan Hooker, who recently criticized the possibility of a Topuria versus Pimblett matchup. Hooker had also distanced himself from a fight with Pimblett, referring to him disparagingly compared to others in the division.

Pimblett responded firmly, saying,

I saw Dan Hooker talking s— the other day, as well,

and continued with,

I used to like Dan Hooker. Now you can eat s—!

This exchange highlights the tense atmosphere surrounding the lightweight title race, with Pimblett eager to assert his position despite doubts from others.

As the lightweight division continues to develop, Pimblett’s determination to face Ilia Topuria regardless of ranking challenges could shape upcoming matchmaking decisions in the UFC. Fans of the sport can expect tension to build as both fighters prepare for possible encounters that may define the division’s hierarchy later this year.
