Scottie Scheffler praises tough FedEx St Jude course after strong first round showing at TPC Southwind

Scottie Scheffler delivered an impressive performance in the opening round of the FedEx St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind, posting a steady 67 to sit three-under par. The New Jersey native expressed admiration for the challenging course, emphasizing the recent changes that have made it a true test for players during this PGA Tour event.

Scheffler, currently focused on concluding his remarkable year with further victories, is determined to contend strongly throughout the tournament. Although five shots behind early leader Akshay Bhatia, his controlled start keeps him well-positioned as the championship progresses.

Scottie Scheffler’s perspective on the redesigned TPC Southwind

TPC Southwind has undergone several renovations aimed at enhancing the course’s difficulty and strategic demands. Scheffler noted that the updates included the installation of fresh, firmer greens and thicker rough, which have raised the stakes for accuracy and shot-making.

Renovations were good. They put in new greens, fresh greens, firmed it up. They also, I felt like, they definitely tried to grow the rough a little bit thicker this year,

Scheffler said.

Overall I thought it was a really good test. You’ve got to hit the ball well out here, and there’s great rewards for good shots and the bad shots are being punished as well.

Scheffler began his round strongly with two birdies in the first three holes, noting that the front nine offers more scoring opportunities than the back nine. This section allows players to build momentum early on, a strategy Scheffler aims to capitalize on.

You’ve got a reachable par-5 on third and then two wedge holes to start as well. Did a good job getting the ball in fairway and then hitting some nice approach shots as well.

How Scheffler manages to minimize mistakes and maintain consistency

Known for his consistent ball-striking, Scheffler’s methodical approach once again shone through despite registering a bogey on the 18th hole. His rise to world number one is largely credited to this disciplined style, which goes beyond simply aiming for fairways and greens.

Scheffler explained that successful execution is much more difficult to achieve than it sounds, requiring high concentration and precision on every shot.

When I’m executing and hitting fairways, it’s a lot easier to avoid bogeys, but when you start missing fairways out here, bogeys are going to come pretty quick.

His thoughtful approach to the course and steady scoring underline his potential to remain a leading contender at the FedEx St Jude Championship. As the tournament continues, Scheffler’s ability to navigate the demanding layout of TPC Southwind will be crucial to his quest for another victory this season.
