From Rising Star to Rival: How Zane Smith’s NASCAR Dream Clashed with Carson Hocevar’s Rise

Zane Smith NASCAR rising star has become a focal point in the unfolding rivalry with Carson Hocevar as the two drivers compete for prominence in NASCAR’s Cup Series. Nearly two years ago, Smith was the driver receiving a Cup Series opportunity through Spire Motorsports and was widely seen as a future champion, but recent developments have altered that trajectory.

Smith’s path diverged from Hocevar’s after his move to Spire was part of an arrangement following his contract with Trackhouse Racing, which at the time had not expanded to field three Cup cars. At a September 16, 2023, press conference at Bristol Motor Speedway, Smith was introduced as a top prospect expected to have a successful career, highlighting the high hopes placed on him.

The Rise of Carson Hocevar and Changing Fortunes

Trackhouse founder Justin Marks praised Zane Smith’s abilities and work ethic during that period, stating,

“There was a short list of names, and Zane was at the top of that list the whole time,”

followed by,

“Huge fan of him, what he’s accomplished, his talent and his grind.”

However, less than a year later, Trackhouse announced they would part ways with Smith due to his struggles in his first full Cup season, where he finished with an average result of 23.2.

In comparison, Hocevar, also promoted from the Truck Series after securing four victories, became a benchmark for success. Despite being younger at 23 years old, Hocevar finished nine spots ahead of Smith—26 years old—in the 2024 points standings while racing as teammates at Spire Motorsports.

The Emerging Feud on the Track

The rivalry between Smith and Hocevar intensified at Iowa Speedway, where an on-track incident escalated tensions. Hocevar spun Smith after a restart, causing Smith to fall multiple laps behind due to repairs. Smith attempted to retaliate with his No. 38 Ford but was unsuccessful.

Hocevar later posted a social media video showing Smith’s failed maneuver and humorously shared a photo of a supermarket’s “Take a number” machine, symbolizing Smith as just another challenger to overcome. This gesture came after Smith’s crew chief confronted Hocevar, reflecting the brewing conflict between the former teammates.

Hocevar’s tough, competitive style has unsettled many experienced drivers as he continues performing well on a weekly basis, making the rivalry with Smith especially personal and publicly visible.

Upcoming Challenges and Career Turning Points

The situation sets the scene for added intensity at Watkins Glen International, a track where both drivers previously earned top-five finishes last year. For Smith, this weekend brings constant reminders of how quickly circumstances can change in the Cup Series, as he confronts both personal and professional challenges.

Moreover, Shane van Gisbergen, Trackhouse’s newest full-time driver, aims for his fourth straight road or street course victory, and Connor Zilisch, a 19-year-old rising talent, is preparing to replace Daniel Suárez at Trackhouse next season while competing across NASCAR’s top divisions at The Glen.

Smith’s move to Front Row Motorsports for 2025 marks a fresh start following what he calls an “ugly year,” reflecting on his experience and resilience. He noted,

“There was a lot of unknowns and uncertainty and just kind of a bad taste, but with that, you move forward,”

adding,

“I’m trying to do better at living in the now and appreciating what I’ve got. Hopefully, I have a long future racing on Sundays, but nothing is ever promised in motorsports.”

Zane Smith’s Journey as a Reflection of NASCAR’s Challenges

The contrasting paths of Smith and Hocevar exemplify the competitive nature of NASCAR’s next generation, where promising drivers face unpredictable career ups and downs. Smith’s story highlights how quickly a driver once labeled a prodigy can be displaced as new talents emerge and teams realign their strategies.

As Smith works to rebuild momentum with Front Row Motorsports, his experience serves as a reminder of the sport’s volatility and the endurance required to succeed at the highest levels of competition. The ongoing rivalry with Hocevar adds a personal element that will likely continue to influence their performances on track and the narrative surrounding NASCAR’s future stars.
