Marina Mabrey Breaks Silence: Trade Request Denied, But She’s Not Backing Down
Connecticut Sun's Marina Mabrey stays focused and performs despite trade request denial; remains crucial in challenging season.

Connecticut Sun guard Marina Mabrey has been a standout performer during a challenging season for the team. In a recent interview, she addressed her trade request from February, which the Sun ultimately declined, and shared her determination to keep giving her best despite the setback. This insight into Mabrey’s trade request response sheds light on her current mindset and professional attitude.

The Player’s Candid Reaction to the Denied Trade Request

Marina Mabrey opened up about her experience with Connecticut Sun and how the team rejected her request to be traded earlier this year. Speaking with Sportskeeda’s Mark Medina, Mabrey compared her situation in professional basketball to a corporate job, emphasizing the practical realities of employment beyond just sports.

“At the end of the day, people think about this as a sport. But it’s still a job,” Mabrey expressed. “You think about corporate jobs. You come in, and people get fired all the time. You don’t think twice. People leave. People take different jobs.

“But at the end of the day, you still have to sit down and do what you’re supposed to do. It’s the same thing. I’m still going to show up and try to do exactly what I can do to the best of my ability.”

Despite the frustration of her trade request being denied, Mabrey remains focused on her performance. She acknowledged her status as one of the top players and stressed her commitment to continuing to work hard regardless of the outcome.

“I know I’m one of the best players in the world. So I’m going to come out there and do it every day. You ask for a different job, you don’t get it. So does that mean you’re going to stop working?” she remarked.

Reasons Behind Connecticut Sun’s Decision to Reject the Trade

After arriving at Connecticut from the Chicago Sky earlier this year, Marina Mabrey requested a move away from the Sun as the season began, but team management chose not to approve the trade. Connecticut Sun President Jennifer Rizzotti explained the organization’s confidence in their roster and strategic direction despite Mabrey’s request.

“We’re not hitting the panic button,” Rizzotti said. “We feel good about the moves that we’ve made. We’ve been very intentional about our priorities.”

Rizzotti also highlighted that the team was aware Mabrey had previously requested trades with two other teams, presenting a known risk when acquiring her.

“We knew at the time that she had already forced her way out of two teams. So, it was a bit risky for us to trade for her, but we felt like it was worth it,” Rizzotti said.

Despite the risk, the Sun believe the decision has yielded positive results, as Mabrey continues to perform strongly amidst the team‘s struggles.

Mabrey’s Continued Impact During a Tough Season

Even with the Connecticut Sun holding the league’s worst record at 5–24, Mabrey has remained a bright spot for the franchise. She currently averages 14.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game, ranking second only to veteran Tina Charles. Her consistent effort highlights her professionalism and resilience despite the team’s overall difficulties.

Mabrey’s stance and performance suggest that, although the trade request was denied, she is committed to contributing fully to the Sun. How this determination will influence the remainder of her season and future career moves remains closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
