Patrick Mahomes addresses father's DWI arrest before Super Bowl, highlighting family impact and personal growth in "The Kingdom."

Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, is speaking out about his father Pat Sr.’s arrest for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) in February 2024, which took place just days before Mahomes won his third Super Bowl in an overtime victory against the San Francisco 49ers. Pat Sr., a former Major League Baseball pitcher for the New York Mets, was sentenced to 10 days in jail after being charged with a third-degree felony related to the incident.

Mahomes discussed how this difficult period impacted his family and how it became a turning point for his dad in the upcoming docuseries The Kingdom, which offers an inside look at the Chiefs organization.

Insights Into Pat Sr.’s Struggles and Path to Change

Pat Mahomes Sr. played professional baseball for over a decade before retiring in 2003, but his struggles with DWIs and traffic violations have been a recurring issue. This latest arrest forced the family to confront the consequences publicly.

“I think just knowing that it hurt me, woke him up to know that, like you can’t keep doing the same things,” Mahomes said via the New York Post.

This acknowledgment from Patrick highlights a moment of self-awareness and potential growth for his father. Brittany, Patrick’s wife, also emphasized how the responsibilities of being watched by the next generations influenced Pat Sr.’s outlook.

“I think it finally hit him that, you know, ‘I have my kids watching me, I have my grandkids now that are watching me,” said Patrick’s wife, Brittany.

Pat Sr. himself shared the emotional toll the situation took on him, admitting the shame he felt when questioned about his son’s issues during this difficult time.

“It kind of hit home before the Super Bowl last year, when I got in trouble. For him to have to answer questions about me, you know, was probably the most embarrassing thing that I’ve ever been through in my life,” revealed Mahomes Sr.

Exclusive Access and Revelations in ‘The Kingdom’ Documentary

The documentary director, Kristen Lappas, who is a two-time Emmy Award winner, expressed surprise that Pat Mahomes Sr. agreed to participate openly about his challenges in the film.

“I was surprised that his dad agreed to sit down for an interview and was as forthcoming as he was about his struggles. I do think it allows you to understand Patrick in a different and new way,” she said.

The production team gained unprecedented access to Arrowhead Stadium, including restricted areas like the locker room, training room, and an underground archive room. This provided a rare glimpse into the Chiefs’ environment and the forces shaping Mahomes’ journey.

Patrick Mahomes’ Drive Heading into the 2025 Season

After the Chiefs suffered a heavy 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, preventing them from becoming the first team to win three consecutive <a href="https://www.buzzineintl.com/category/football/nfl/”>NFL titles, Mahomes has strong motivation to rebound in the 2025 season. Beyond the disappointment of the defeat, Mahomes is also determined to prove his worth following a recent setback in his Madden video game rating.

His rating fell slightly due to his statistics from the 2024 season, where he threw for 3,928 yards—his first season under 4,000 yards—and recorded only 26 touchdown passes, his lowest since 2019.

“I like playing Madden, so I would like to be rated higher, but I’ve got to play and showcase that stuff on the field,” Mahomes told Sports Illustrated Thursday.

“I believe that if I go out there and play the football I want to play, we can get to 99 pretty quickly,” he added.

This determination to improve both on the field and in public perception reflects how personal and professional challenges continue to motivate Mahomes as he leads the Chiefs into the new season.
