The New York Giants will display both their established and emerging quarterback talent in Saturday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. The Giants plan to start veteran Russell Wilson while giving rookie Jaxson Dart significant playing time as the team evaluates its quarterback depth.
According to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, Wilson is slated to start the matchup with Dart expected to receive extended minutes against Buffalo’s defense. Head coach Brian Daboll told reporters Thursday that while Wilson is the starter, Dart will definitely see action during the game.
Wilson’s Readiness and Playing Time Remain Unclear
Wilson expressed his eagerness to take the field, though he also said he will accept the coaching staff’s decisions regarding his playing time.
“I always want to be out there with my teammates, man,”
Wilson said.
“I’m excited to get going, if Coach lets us play or whatever it is, I’m ready to go. I’m ready to play.”
It remains uncertain how many snaps Wilson will receive, and there is no information on when backups Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito will play or how much time they will have on the field. However, Wilson has a consistent history of preseason appearances, starting two games in each of the last two years.
At the beginning of training camp, Daboll confirmed Wilson as the Giants’ starting quarterback, designating the other three quarterbacks—including Dart, Winston, and DeVito—to compete for the backup role.
Focus on Rookie Jaxson Dart’s Development During Preseason
The Giants are placing significant emphasis on evaluating Dart’s progress this preseason. Selected 25th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft after the Giants traded up into the first round, Dart represents the team‘s future at the position. At 22 years old, the rookie quarterback has the challenge of adjusting from a college system that was considered quarterback-friendly to the more complex style of pro football.
According to B/R’s NFL scouting department, Dart ranked as the third-best quarterback in this year’s draft class, though concerns remain about how well his college experience at Mississippi translates to the NFL. This preseason offers a crucial opportunity for Dart to gain reps and demonstrate his capabilities as the Giants seek to improve on last season’s 3-14 record.
Saturday’s game marks Dart’s chance to prove what he can contribute and how quickly he can develop into a viable option for the Giants moving forward.
