Shohei Ohtani Hints at Pitching Workout Changes to Boost Durability Amid Intense Season
Shohei Ohtani adjusts pitching workout to prevent cramping, continues strong performances with memorable two-way play.

Shohei Ohtani delivered a notable two-way performance at Dodger Stadium on the day he handed out his World Series replica rings, despite the Los Angeles Dodgers falling 5-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals. Ohtani’s pitching workout adjustment is becoming a point of focus as he looks to maintain his durability through a demanding season.

Ohtani’s Strong Showing on the Mound and at the Plate

Ohtani matched season highs by recording eight strikeouts, throwing 54 pitches, and lasting four innings as a pitcher. He allowed only one run on two hits without issuing a walk. At the plate, Ohtani contributed a two-run homer in the third inning, marking the 1,000th hit of his Major League Baseball career. This milestone places him alongside Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui as the only Japanese-born players to reach 1,000 or more hits in the <a href="https://www.buzzineintl.com/category/baseball/mlb/”>MLB.

I thought it was a big day for me, personally, getting to the fourth inning, being able to pitch through it,

Ohtani said through interpreter Will Ireton.

I think that was really good in terms of building up where I am.

Reflecting on Performance and Approach Consistency

Since resuming pitching duties, Ohtani’s offensive output has slightly declined; however, he does not feel any need to change how he approaches hitting or pitching. The three-time MVP emphasized that he does not alter his mindset based on whether he is pitching and hitting on the same day or just hitting.

I don’t really try to think too differently on days that I pitch and hit and on days that I only hit,

he explained.

Adjusting Workouts to Support Endurance

Ohtani’s recent strong performance came shortly after being pulled from a previous start due to cramping in his right hip. At 31 years old, he anticipates changes to his routine between starts to reduce the risk of injury and enhance his stamina, especially as he is expected to pitch more innings moving forward.

I’m just thinking of adjusting how I work out or do my work in between my outings, especially now that I’m going to be throwing more innings,

Ohtani said.

So that’s something to consider with the training staff.

To help maintain his health, Ohtani has made his last two pitching starts before an off day, a schedule he may continue following.

What This Means for Ohtani and the Dodgers

As Ohtani balances his unique role as a two-way player, making pitching workout adjustments could be key to sustaining his performance and physical wellbeing throughout the season. Collaborating closely with the Dodgers’ training staff will likely help him fine-tune his preparation and recovery, ensuring he remains a pivotal asset on both the mound and at the plate during crucial games ahead.
