The Jacksonville Jaguars are preparing for a pivotal new season under head coach Liam Coen, who has the challenging task of steering the team back to playoff contention after missing the postseason for two years. Central to this effort is quarterback Trevor Lawrence, whose leadership will be critical for the Jaguars’ success during the upcoming NFL campaign.
The Jaguars will begin their preseason at EverBank Stadium with a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, aiming to build momentum early. Liam Coen’s role as the new head coach involves translating the lessons from training camp into a strong on-field performance, relying heavily on his quarterback’s abilities and leadership.
Liam Coen’s Perspective on Trevor Lawrence’s Leadership Qualities
Before the season opener, Liam Coen spoke with NFL Network‘s Tom Pelissero about the expectations he holds for Trevor Lawrence and how well he understands his quarterback’s playing style. Coen shared his early impressions, revealing a long-standing familiarity with Lawrence’s abilities.
High expectations. I’ve actually watched him play live as a freshman in high school,
Coen recalled.
He explained that although he wasn’t directly recruiting Lawrence during his early years, Coen had followed Lawrence’s development closely while at Brown University.
I wasn’t recruiting him at the time; I was at Brown University and had the chance to follow his career from a distance over the past few years,
he said. Coen emphasized Lawrence’s character as a key factor in his leadership.
Once you get to know him, you hear the humility in his approach and see the determination he carries, the drive to prove himself and show what he’s truly capable of.

Coen also highlighted Lawrence’s resilience and mental toughness, recalling a notable playoff comeback.
He’s obviously led one of the best playoff comebacks in NFL history. He’s mentally and physically tough.
Reflecting on the Jaguars’ recent postseason appearance, Coen emphasized the importance of surrounding Lawrence with the right support.
It’s about helping in a lot of different ways to give him the best opportunity to succeed.
Evaluating Travis Hunter’s Role and Development According to Liam Coen
While Trevor Lawrence is positioned as the clear team leader, Coen commented on the pressure facing rookie wide receiver Travis Hunter and his integration into the team.
For Travis, it’s very normal, it’s kind of what he’s used to. For us, this has been an organizational decision in many ways, where everyone, as you saw during practice, has to be on board.
Coen acknowledged Hunter’s commitment and physical durability as positive attributes in his rookie season.
It’s the little things he’s learning throughout this process, but the guy just works. He has stamina, he can keep going, and he wants to keep going.
In balancing the roles of Lawrence and Hunter, Coen appears focused on building a cohesive unit that supports the quarterback’s leadership while fostering Hunter’s growth and contribution to the team’s offense.
The upcoming season will test Liam Coen’s ability to blend his coaching philosophy with the talents of Trevor Lawrence and Travis Hunter, as the Jaguars strive to return to playoff contention. Lawrence’s established leadership on and off the field will be central to this mission, with Hunter’s development adding depth to the team’s offensive potential. Fans and analysts alike will watch closely as these dynamics unfold in the Jaguars’ effort to reclaim success in the NFL.
