Former Pro Bowl lineman Terron Armstead attended the Bears’ joint practice with the Miami Dolphins in Chicago and shared his observations about Williams’ performance. While he acknowledged Williams’ raw talent, Armstead highlighted significant issues with the quarterback’s ability to read defenses before the snap.

Armstead explained that Caleb Williams frequently failed to recognize threats in the pocket. According to him, Williams was not sensing pressure or anticipating blitzes prior to plays. This lack of pre-snap recognition allowed the Dolphins’ defense to disrupt the Bears’ offense repeatedly.

On a consistent basis, Caleb was not able to recognize where he was in danger. He wasn’t feeling pressure, he wasn’t feeling blitzes. He wasn’t seeing blitzes pre-snap.
Armstead also noted that Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver effectively deployed rushers from various areas, resulting in multiple near-sacks throughout the practice.

Reasons Behind the Early Struggles and Expectations for Improvement
Unlike some critics who have been harsh without detailed football insight, Armstead offered a more measured perspective. He suggested that the Bears’ coaching staff, led by offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, may be intentionally overwhelming Williams with information to accelerate his learning process.
I know Ben Johnson has purposely put a lot on his plate right now, for him to try to overload him with information, and hopefully that will speed up his process,
Armstead explained.
But for the Bears to be successful this year and moving forward, his process has to get faster.
