Jalen Brunson’s basketball journey to becoming one of the NBA’s top point guards was marked by numerous challenges, starting from his childhood. A significant hurdle came from within his own family, as his father, Rick Brunson, played a unique role in shaping his early development and competitive edge.
Rick Brunson, who played nine years in the NBA as a 6-foot-4 point guard for eight different teams, drew from his experience growing up in New York City during the 1980s and 90s. His competitive nature was deeply influenced by the tough environment, fueling his determination and approach to basketball.
A Father’s Tough Lessons Through Unconventional Methods
When Jalen began playing basketball, Rick was thrilled by his son’s passion but insisted on teaching important life lessons through the game. From an early age, Rick emphasized that success required hard work and no shortcuts, instilling discipline through intense play and strict rules.
“I was always trying to teach him a lesson,”
Rick shared on the Roommates Show.
“You guys just play basketball. For me, when I played, you always kept score.”

While Rick’s main motivation was the joy found in playing basketball, winning was paramount. He applied some questionable tactics during their games to drive that message home, often bending the rules in his favor.
“He’d be winning, 4 to 2 in a game up to 5. I’m like, ‘I’m up 3-2.’ He’s like, ‘Alright.’ He never knew the score,”
Rick explained.
From Father’s Domination to Son’s Rising Supremacy
Although Jalen was unaware, Rick frequently cheated to maintain his edge in their games. Over time, however, Jalen’s skills outgrew his father’s ability to control the competition. Rick acknowledged the reality of the situation with a mix of humor and honesty.

“He probably beat me more than what he caught cause he didn’t know the score and I just cheated,”
Rick admitted.
Once Jalen reached his junior year of high school, his talent surpassed that of his father, allowing him to expand beyond the lessons of his youth. This progress was pivotal in building the foundation that would support his future success on a much larger stage.
Jalen Brunson’s Rise as a Knicks Leader and NBA Star
In the past two seasons, Jalen Brunson has emerged as a premier player, earning All-NBA Second Team honors—a distinction his father never achieved during his playing career. His continued growth and determination have made him the cornerstone of the New York Knicks franchise, symbolizing both personal and professional triumph.
Reflecting on their different eras and abilities, Jalen’s dominance against his father’s past competitiveness illustrates the evolution of his game and mindset. Rick’s competitive spirit and unconventional coaching ultimately helped sculpt the player Jalen has become today.
Though a rematch between the two now would lack any real contest, that outcome aligns perfectly with Rick’s original intention to push his son toward greatness through the toughest means necessary.
