Jared McCain Praises Sixers’ Draft Picks, Reveals Excitement About New Teammates and Playmaking Potential
Jared McCain praises Sixers draft choices, expressing excitement over VJ Edgecombe and Johni Broome's impact and team dynamics.

During the recent NBA offseason, the Philadelphia 76ers added fresh talent by drafting VJ Edgecombe from Baylor University and Johni Broome from Auburn University. Jared McCain, a former first-round pick for the Sixers, expressed enthusiasm about these additions and his growing connection with his new teammates.

The Sixers’ selections reflect a mix of abilities: Edgecombe, a one-and-done player known for his defensive and scoring impact, averaged 15 points and 2.1 steals during his lone college season. In contrast, Broome played five years at Auburn, establishing himself as a strong presence inside the paint with averages of 18.6 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.

McCain’s Reaction to the Sixers’ Draft Strategy and Team Chemistry

In an exclusive interview with 76ers On SI, Jared McCain praised Philadelphia’s front office for their draft decisions, highlighting his excitement about the new players and the chemistry forming among them. He emphasized the importance of connecting off the court to build good team dynamics.

A-plus decision by our front office, VJ [Edgecombe] and Johni [Broome]. They’re super cool, just getting to know them. I’ve already hung out with VJ a few times at my place, and we just, we’re just we’re just getting to know each other, just great energy,

McCain told 76ers On SI.

I always try and figure out people’s energy and how they react to certain things, and it’s just cool to see somebody who’s high energy like that, and a good, good person at heart, which is the best part.

Observations on Summer League Performances and Playmaking Skills

Fans saw glimpses of Edgecombe and Broome’s potential during the NBA Summer League in early July. Edgecombe’s appearances were limited to two due to a thumb injury, yet he managed impressive averages of 21.5 points and eight rebounds. Despite these numbers, McCain was particularly impressed by Edgecombe’s unexpected ability to create plays and involve teammates.

I mean, he showed exactly what he can do; the athleticism, even the playmaking, was surprising to me,

McCain said.

You know, I didn’t get to see it as much in college, but I was excited to see, like, just the way you can see the floor and just play out there as a pro.

Context on Sixers’ New Talent and Future Outlook

The arrival of Edgecombe and Broome adds depth to the Sixers, emphasizing a blend of scoring, defense, and versatility that the team is aiming to build. McCain’s positive comments reflect optimism about how the rookies can contribute both on and off the court, especially in conjunction with established players.

As these young athletes continue to develop skills and adapt to the professional level, their integration could enhance the Sixers’ overall performance in the upcoming season. Maintaining strong energy and teamwork seems to be a priority among the new group, setting a hopeful tone for fans and the franchise alike.
