The Golden State Warriors are currently at an impasse with 22-year-old forward Jonathan Kuminga during restricted free agency this summer. As Kuminga explores his options around the league, the Warriors have struggled to finalize a new contract, complicating their off-season plans amid ongoing interest in other players.
Trade Prospects Dim Due to NBA Compensation Rules
Several teams, including the Chicago Bulls, Sacramento Kings, and Phoenix Suns, have reportedly shown interest in Kuminga. Among potential moves, the Warriors have expressed significant interest in acquiring Bulls’ point guard Josh Giddey. However, the NBA‘s base year compensation (BYC) rule is making sign-and-trade scenarios particularly difficult to execute, effectively ruling out a swap involving Kuminga and Giddey this summer.
NBA insider Jake Fischer shared insight into the situation:
“Golden State’s interest in Giddey is genuine,”
Fischer reported via The Stein Line Newsletter.
“…I’m told that the Warriors continue to value Giddey’s skillset and have communicated their interest to the Australian point guard’s representation. There simply does not appear to be a feasible pathway to such a trade … not right now. The base-year compensation issue alone makes it challenging before we even get to the limited salary-matching and outgoing player flexibility that Golden State is currently facing.”
The Implications of Potential Moves for Both Teams
Acquiring Giddey through a sign-and-trade would mark a significant shift for Golden State as they have concentrated efforts on securing Kuminga’s long-term future with the team. Despite Kuminga’s uncertain contract status, Giddey represents arguably the most promising talent the Warriors could pursue, fitting well into their rotation and potentially serving as a cornerstone for years ahead.
That said, the Bulls also highly value Giddey, which complicates negotiations. Both Golden State and Chicago risk losing their respective restricted free agents if deals cannot be reached, with the possibility that Kuminga or Giddey might simply sign their qualifying offers, leaving teams with limited returns.

There was speculation that a swap involving Kuminga, Giddey, and possibly Bulls guard Coby White might have been feasible, but this prospect appears to be fading amid the complex compensation and salary cap issues that both teams face.
Uncertain Futures for Kuminga and Giddey as Deadline Looms
With few viable trade options on the table, the Warriors and Bulls are left to focus on stabilizing the contract situations of their key restricted free agents independently. Failure to secure deals this summer could lead to both Jonathan Kuminga and Josh Giddey departing their current squads in the future without adequate return for the teams. This uncertainty adds pressure on front offices as the off-season progresses.
The Warriors’ ability to resolve the Jonathan Kuminga Warriors contract talks will greatly influence their roster construction moving forward, and how the Bulls approach managing Giddey’s contract may equally impact Chicago’s competitiveness in upcoming seasons.
