The Istanbul Park circuit, a venue associated with memorable moments for seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, is preparing for a stable return to the sport’s schedule. The Turkish Grand Prix last took place in 2021, stepped in temporarily during the Covid-19 pandemic when the Singapore Grand Prix was canceled.
This race was first reintroduced in 2020 after nearly a decade off the calendar due to pandemic disruptions, with Hamilton capturing his record-tying seventh world title in that rain-soaked event. Since then, the circuit had not been used, but recent developments suggest a lasting comeback.
Leadership at Istanbul Park Commits to Long-Term Formula 1 Hosting
The Turkish Automobile Sports Federation (TOSFED), under the leadership of its president Eren Uclertopragi, has taken control of Istanbul Park and is pursuing a permanent slot for the Turkish Grand Prix in the F1 calendar. Following government appointment, TOSFED has engaged in detailed talks with Formula 1 and FIA executives to secure this goal.
Uclertopragi noted a strong government backing for the event’s return, emphasizing the ambition to establish a long-term agreement rather than continuing to serve as a temporary backup. Although the 2026 F1 calendar is already confirmed, Turkey could host the race again if other venues face issues.
“However, unlike during the pandemic, we do not want to host a one-off replacement race; instead, we aim to secure a place on the calendar through a long-term contract.”

Potential Impact of Turkey’s Formula 1 Return on the Sport
The return of Istanbul Park aligns with growing enthusiasm among fans and drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, who has fond memories of success at the track. Its reinstatement would add variety and excitement to the F1 circuit, providing a challenging race venue known for dramatic weather conditions and unpredictable outcomes.
With Turkey securing a long-term position, Formula 1 would benefit from expanding to a key location bridging Europe and Asia, enhancing the sport’s global reach. Fans and stakeholders can expect further announcements on official race dates and accompanying events in the near future.
