Joey Hand, a distinguished Brad Keselowski Ford factory driver, has quietly become an essential figure supporting Keselowski’s road course efforts in NASCAR. Throughout 2024 and 2025, Hand has solidified his role behind the scenes and behind the wheel, helping fuel the success of RFK Racing on road courses during a pivotal time for both the team and Keselowski.

Joey Hand’s Journey from Endurance Racing to NASCAR Road Courses

Originating from Sacramento, California, Joey Hand built his reputation initially as a versatile and accomplished sports car racer. Early in his career, he triumphed in the Star Mazda Series, before rising to international recognition with multiple endurance racing victories. Hand co-won the 2011 24 Hours of Daytona in the GTLM class, claimed a GT class victory at the 2012 12 Hours of Sebring, and, notably, captured a prestigious class win at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMGTE Pro category while driving the Ford GT for Chip Ganassi Team USA. These achievements firmly placed him among the top endurance racers worldwide.

While endurance racing has been Hand’s forte, he transitioned into NASCAR’s road racing scene with growing involvement starting in 2021. Making his Cup Series debut in the No. 52 car for Rick Ware Racing at the Charlotte Roval that year, Hand continued to gain experience through multiple road course starts in 2022. These included events at Circuit of The Americas (COTA), Sonoma Raceway, Road America, Indianapolis Road Course, Watkins Glen, and the Charlotte Roval again. Though his finishes remained modest in these outings, Hand contributed invaluable composure and adaptability critical to the challenges road courses present.

Becoming a Key Member of Brad Keselowski’s NASCAR Team

Hand’s technical expertise and consistent performance soon caught the attention of Ford Performance and RFK Racing, Brad Keselowski’s team. His connection to the team deepened through close collaboration on simulator sessions and technical feedback, particularly during the development phase of NASCAR’s new Gen-7 car. He often provided road course-specific insights, such as setup advice, testing information, and strategy pointers, making him an indispensable resource alongside the drivers and engineers.

This collaborative role earned Hand an important opportunity to race for RFK Racing in the No. 60 Ford Mustang during the Chicago Street Course event. Starting at the back of the field, Hand showcased his street racing skills by charging forward to claim a stage victory and ultimately secure a career-best 4th place finish in NASCAR. This standout result highlighted his ability to harmonize his driving instincts with the team’s race-day execution and strategic plans, confirming his status as a highly trusted road course driver within the organization.

Hand also outlined how his current role began with a thorough refresher on NASCAR rules and team protocols, working closely with the crew chief and engineer. He said,

It basically started with the meeting last Wednesday with the team I’m running with, the crew chief, engineer…doing pit stop practice, looking at the NASCAR rules again to refresh my memory. I’ve done seven total before, so I have a feeling it’s more of a refresher course on all the stuff… Man, the driver’s driving a racecar… it’s not easy but obviously it comes naturally because you can do it all your life.

Standing Ready for Keselowski Amid Family and Championship Pressures

At key events like Watkins Glen, Hand’s role extends beyond just technical support, serving as a critical backup driver. Brad Keselowski, juggling the demands of the NASCAR Cup Series championship hunt and impending fatherhood with his wife expecting their fourth child, relies on Hand’s readiness to step in if required. This dual role highlights Hand’s reliability as both a steady presiding presence and a capable competitor prepared to take the wheel at a moment’s notice.

Hand reflected on his close working relationship with Keselowski, emphasizing their bond developed through simulator work. He shared,

Brad [Keselowski] and I have gotten close doing sim stuff, and he was like, ‘hey, you want to do Chicago?’ I said absolutely. I do not turn down races, pretty much.

Joey Hand’s Crucial Role in Enhancing Team Performance and Culture

Beyond his driving prowess, Hand contributes significantly as a mentor and strategist within RFK Racing and the broader Ford Performance family. Drawing from his diverse international racing experience, he advises on maintaining peak physical conditioning and mental focus—two critical elements for enduring the demanding nature of top-level motorsports. Hand’s guidance helps emerging drivers refine their techniques on road courses, focusing on braking points, racing lines, and decision-making under pressure.

Hand’s calm demeanor and professionalism foster a positive environment in the garage, promoting patience and calculated risks—qualities crucial in high-stakes racing environments. His presence has been particularly valuable during transitional phases within the team, such as driver rotations and tactical adjustments, where his steady influence provides consistency and stability.

As NASCAR continues to expand the number and prestige of road course events on its calendar, Hand’s expertise represents a vital asset. His ongoing partnership with RFK Racing and Ford signals a commitment to pushing the boundaries of performance and innovation, aiming to elevate the team’s results on these increasingly important circuits.

Joey Hand’s story is a compelling example of how a talented and versatile driver, often outside the spotlight, can become an indispensable contributor to a top-tier NASCAR team. His blend of experience, skill, and teamwork embodies the collaborative spirit essential for success in today’s multifaceted motorsports landscape.
