Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard has explained what distinguishes elite drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher from the rest of the field, identifying an exceptional champion gene that sets them apart. Speaking recently, Coulthard described how this rare quality defines true champions in the sport.
During his career, Coulthard secured 13 Grand Prix victories while racing for several fast teams. He competed alongside some of the sport’s best, including word champions Mika Hakkinen, Kimi Raikkonen, and Damon Hill, giving him direct insight into the traits of dominant drivers.

“[They] had that exceptional gene in them, I didn’t have it, but your Mika’s, your Michael’s, your Lewis’, whoever the great champions are, and I’m sure it’s the same in business with work ethic, they didn’t see the danger, they saw the opportunity,” said Coulthard.

“Medium speed corners. Low speed, I would put myself up against any driver.”
Using an analogy from skiing, Coulthard elaborated on this difference:
“I think those guys were able to live in that middle part of the ski more often. I was very good if I was all on the front axle. I was not very good in medium speed corners.”
