Spencer Torkelson's power resurgence revitalizes Tigers' lineup, making a significant impact with 25 homers in phenomenal 2025 season.

The Detroit Tigers have been pleasantly surprised by offensive contributions from unexpected players, with Spencer Torkelson standing out prominently. The first baseman, who was the top overall pick in the 2020 <a href="https://www.buzzineintl.com/category/baseball/mlb/”>MLB draft from Arizona State, appeared to be on the verge of losing his everyday role after the 2024 season due to a decline following a promising 2023.

Following the Tigers’ acquisition of second baseman Gleyber Torres during free agency and the subsequent move of Colt Keith to first base, Torkelson’s position on the team seemed uncertain, with trade rumors circulating. Despite this, Detroit chose to keep him, and Torkelson embraced the challenge, determined to revive his standing for Opening Day.

Injuries across the roster opened up opportunities, and an impressive spring training performance helped Torkelson secure a spot. Since then, he has taken full advantage, particularly early in the season, showcasing a powerful bat that has energized the Tigers’ offense.

Torkelson’s Power Surge Elevates Detroit’s Offense

With the Tigers lacking major offseason upgrades, the resurgence of Torkelson’s power hitting has been a key factor in boosting the team’s lineup. After belting 31 home runs in 2023, he has continued to demonstrate his ability to produce long balls, already hitting 25 home runs and adding 23 doubles during the 2025 campaign.

This strong performance has contributed significantly to his 65 runs batted in and positioned him as a vital middle-of-the-lineup presence. His power surge has also propelled him into a rare milestone for the franchise.

According to the Detroit Tigers’ public relations team, Torkelson has become the first player since Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez to record two seasons with at least 25 home runs within a three-year span for Detroit—a feat last achieved in 2014 and 2016.

All-Star outfielder Riley Greene came close to joining this exclusive group, setting a career-best with 27 homers in 2025 but falling short in 2024 with 24.

Torkelson’s Role in the Tigers’ Future Plans

Torkelson’s resurgence is more than just a short-term return to form; it suggests he could play a key role in Detroit’s long-term outlook. Currently experiencing the best season of his career, he holds an OPS+ of 131 and a bWAR of 1.9, surpassing his previous peak figures and highlighting his improved all-around offensive value.

As Torkelson continues to deliver power and run production, his presence solidifies the Tigers’ lineup depth, giving the team a reliable threat as they look to build on recent successes and regain playoff contention.
