Amid contract extension talks, Jauan Jennings awaits a new 49ers deal while recovering from a calf injury.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings has not participated in practice since July 27 due to a calf injury, which occurred shortly after reports emerged that he seeks a new deal and might consider a trade if the team fails to offer fair compensation. Entering the final year of his current two-year, $15.4 million extension signed in May 2024, Jennings’ hopes for a contract extension appear uncertain as negotiations have yet to progress.

Contract Disagreements Coincide with Team Roster Changes

According to Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard,

“two sides are not close on a new agreement,”

highlighting the complexity of the timing given the recent overhaul in the 49ers’ lineup. This offseason saw key free agents like Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward, and Talanoa Hufanga leave the team, intensifying pressure on remaining players, including Jennings.

Coach Shanahan Addresses Jennings’ Absence and Injury Status

Earlier this month, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confronted speculation regarding whether Jennings’ missed practices were tied to contract disputes or solely his injury. Shanahan remarked,

“But he tells me it’s his calf, and the calf shows. So, [we] got to be delicate with those calves.”

His cautious approach underlines the importance of preserving Jennings’ health amid ongoing negotiations.

Wide Receiver Depth Challenges Worsen With Injuries

The 49ers secured wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk with a significant four-year, $120 million contract extension before the 2024 season, but Aiyuk is slated to start on the physically unable to perform list following a season-ending knee injury last year. With both Aiyuk and Jennings sidelined, the team’s wide receiver options are limited.

Rookie fourth-round pick Jordan Watkins will miss at least one month due to a high ankle sprain sustained in the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos. That leaves former first-round pick Ricky Pearsall as the leading wide receiver currently active, coming off a strong finish to last season.

Jennings’ Recent Performance Highlights His Value

In 15 games during the 2024 season, Jennings recorded a breakout performance with 77 receptions totaling 975 yards and six touchdowns. Over his career, he has accumulated 155 catches for 1,938 yards and 13 touchdowns, making him an important asset amid contract uncertainties and team roster vulnerabilities.
