Jaren Jackson Jr. embraces a fresh start, changing to number 8, honoring his father and symbolizing new beginnings.

As he prepares for his eighth NBA season, Memphis Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr. has announced a change to his jersey number, opting to wear number 8 instead of his longtime number 13. The shift, rooted in personal and family significance, is intended to mark a fresh start for Jackson as he embarks on the 2025 NBA campaign.

Jackson explained the emotional connection behind the change, saying,

“It’s super personal to me. It’s super personal to my family,”

and added,

“I’m connected with 8 in a real way. It reaches into the territory of new beginnings. It’s infinite. It’s just a good place to draw energy from.”

New Number Accompanies Team Changes and Leadership Responsibilities

The jersey switch arrives amid broader transitions within the Grizzlies organization. After being swept by Oklahoma City in the playoffs, Memphis will enter the new season under the direction of head coach Tuomas Iisalo, who took over late last year from Taylor Jenkins. Meanwhile, the team faces significant roster changes, including the departure of longtime teammate <a href="https://www.buzzineintl.com/tag/desmond-bane/”>Desmond Bane, who was traded to Orlando in June.

Jackson shared his reaction to Bane’s trade, acknowledging the difficulty but accepting the realities of professional basketball: “I wasn’t too much surprised,” he said.

“I mean, when your brothers leave, you are still going to hurt, just because you’re a human being. But at the end of the day, it’s a business. And we’re grown.”

With the salary flexibility gained from Bane’s exit, the Grizzlies secured Jackson on a five-year, $240 million contract extension, cementing his position as one of the franchise’s foundational players. As one of the main leaders, Jackson is expected to help keep the team unified amid these changes.

Reflecting on his evolving role, Jackson remarked,

“You’re going to get closer to your prime, and things are going to change for you. I feel like this is a good starting point for a whole new journey of stuff. I’m approaching this year with that spearheaded, disciplined mindset of trying to get us to the promised land.”

Outstanding Performance Sets Stage for Elevated Expectations

Jackson enters the season coming off one of the best years of his career, having averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks over 74 games. His shooting efficiency included 48.8% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc. He was recognized as an NBA All-Star for the second time and earned second-team All-Defensive honors.

The Grizzlies will rely heavily on Jackson to enhance his contributions as they compete in the challenging Western Conference, where consistent high-level performance is vital for playoff success.

On the importance of setting an example and fostering team cohesion, Jackson stated,

“Whoever’s in the locker room is in your foxhole, and that’s where you’re going to war with. What are your habits? What are your techniques? Are you willing to share? Are you willing to talk? Who are the leaders? It’s simple, but it’s not easy.”

Outlook for Jaren Jackson Jr. and the Grizzlies in 2025

Jaren Jackson Jr.’s decision to adopt number 8 symbolizes more than just a change in uniform; it marks a renewed sense of purpose and leadership for both himself and the Memphis Grizzlies. As the team adjusts to new coaching, roster changes, and heightened expectations, Jackson’s role as a cornerstone player becomes even more crucial. His focus on discipline and unity aims to guide the team toward greater playoff success and establish a strong foundation for the future.
