Logan Sargeant Makes Surprise IMSA Racing Comeback for Two Key Endurance Events This Season
Logan Sargeant triumphantly returns to IMSA racing at Indy and Road Atlanta with PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports.

American driver Logan Sargeant is making an unexpected return to prototype racing in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, six months after parting ways with IDEC Sport Racing and the Hyundai Genesis team. His comeback schedule includes the six-hour Indianapolis Motor Speedway race on September 21 and the ten-hour Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on October 11.

This Logan Sargeant IMSA racing comeback defies earlier reports from IDEC Sport Racing, which announced in February that Sargeant would be stepping away from motorsport to explore other interests. His return signals a renewed commitment to racing rather than retirement.

New Partnership and Team Lineup Announced

This week, Sargeant was revealed as a client of Oliver Gavin’s management group, who is a former Le Mans winner, suggesting this comeback might be part of longer-term career plans. He will compete with the PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports team, joining former IndyCar driver Benjamin Pedersen and Bronze-rated driver Naveen Rao in the LMP2 class.

Expressing enthusiasm, Sargeant said,

“I’m super excited to be jumping back into a car for the last two LMP2 races in IMSA with PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports,”

“It’s a great opportunity to drive at two special tracks, Indianapolis and Road Atlanta, and help push for good results with my teammates Ben and Naveen.”

“I’m eager to contribute to a successful couple races for the team, and bring my knowledge and experience to everyone involved. See you at the track.”

Team Welcomes Sargeant’s Experience and Pace

Bobby Oergel, team principal of PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports, warmly welcomed the signing, stating,

“Myself and all the crew here at PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports are very excited that Logan is able to join us for the last two endurance events of this season.”

“I am sure Logan’s pace will be top-notch and everyone will work well together. We really want to welcome him into our team in a smooth and easy fashion. The opportunity to do some testing ahead of the Indy event should do just that.”

From Karting Champion to Formula 1 and IMSA

Sargeant’s motorsport career began with a world karting title, followed by multiple podium finishes in FIA Formula 3 and a strong fourth-place standing in FIA Formula 2. These results earned him a Formula 1 seat with Williams for 2023 and 2024. During his rookie F1 season, he became the first American in 30 years to score championship points, achieving this milestone at the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin.

Despite this promising start, Sargeant’s overall performance in Formula 1 did not meet expectations, leading to his replacement after the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort. He then joined Genesis Magma Racing’s Hypercar program with teammates Andre Lotterer and Pipo Derani, but departed abruptly in February of this year.

The Road Ahead for Logan Sargeant

Sargeant’s return to IMSA highlights his desire to remain active in competitive racing and showcases his adaptability across different motorsport disciplines. His participation in two major endurance races at iconic venues like Indianapolis and Road Atlanta provides him with a platform to demonstrate his skills and help PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports compete strongly in the season’s final events.

With his recent alignment to Oliver Gavin’s management and support from his new team, Sargeant’s future in sports car racing may be more sustained than previously thought, offering fans and teams alike reason for cautious optimism about his career revival.
