Max Verstappen’s expertise in navigating Formula 1’s complex rulebook has been praised as an “art form” by Stephen Knowles, Red Bull’s racing director. Speaking on The Inside Track podcast, Knowles emphasized how Verstappen’s deep knowledge of sporting regulations plays a crucial role in his racing success alongside his natural speed.
Since taking over from Jonathan Wheatley as Red Bull’s head of sporting regulations, Knowles has observed Verstappen’s ability to push the boundaries of the rules precisely and consistently. He noted that Verstappen’s skillfulness in interpreting what is allowed and what is not has become a significant part of his competitive edge on the track.
Verstappen’s Skillful Manipulation of Sporting Rules Sets Him Apart
Knowles explained that Verstappen’s rulebook mastery is more than just technical knowledge. It is the driver’s capacity to exploit regulations fully, often walking a fine line between legality and advantage, that distinguishes his performance. This tactful approach sometimes triggers debate, yet Knowles firmly considers it an important facet of racing.
“I think that the rules that we go racing are part of the sporting landscape and making the most out of that is a big part, big area [of his] performance in the same way as raw pace is,”
he said. This view underlines how managing regulations effectively is as essential for a driver’s success as driving fast.
Defending the Rules: Verstappen Responds to Controversies and Criticism
Verstappen’s adherence to—and strategic use of—F1’s rules has drawn attention both on and off the track. An example occurred during last year’s United States Grand Prix, when McLaren‘s Lando Norris received a penalty for overtaking outside the racing limits while attempting to pass Verstappen. Verstappen has been upfront about the regulations, emphasizing their clarity and long-standing nature.

“At the end of the day, you cannot overtake outside of the white line,”
Verstappen stated before the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix. He remarked on the consistency of the rule across racing formats:
“That’s a very clear rule and I’ve been done by it myself. I don’t understand why suddenly now we need to ask and scream for changes in the regulation when it’s been like that forever. I grew up go-karting, F3, F1, you know that you cannot pass outside of the white line. It’s as simple as that.”
Further emphasizing his stance, Verstappen clarified,
“It’s how the rules are written. I didn’t make the rules, first of all, I just follow the rules as much as I can. Of course, sometimes you get caught out with it, we’ve had that in the past. I just implement the rules and play with them.”
Open Communication Between Verstappen and Red Bull Leadership
Knowles also praised Verstappen’s straightforward communication style, highlighting how their honest discussions facilitate a clear understanding of racing strategies and regulatory interpretations. This transparency helps align Verstappen’s approach with the team’s tactical goals on and off the track.
“He takes a lot on board. We have very honest chats. He’s not the kind of person that you need to skirt around an issue with. You can be very direct, which I really appreciate,”
Knowles remarked, underscoring the mutual respect in their working relationship.
Verstappen’s Regulatory Expertise: A Defining Factor for Future Races
Max Verstappen F1 rulebook mastery remains a pivotal factor in his continued dominance. His precise manipulation of the regulations ensures he maximizes every permissible advantage without crossing into penalty territory, a skill that influences how rivals approach competition. As F1 rules evolve, Verstappen’s thorough understanding and strategic application make him a formidable contender, shaping race dynamics and potentially influencing future regulatory discussions.
