Sophie Cunningham Slams Cristiano Ronaldo’s Over-the-Top Engagement Ring: “Not a Fan”

Sophie Cunningham openly criticized Cristiano Ronaldo’s oversized and flashy engagement ring given to Georgina Rodriguez, sharing her honest opinion on its design. The Indiana Fever guard voiced her thoughts shortly after the couple announced their engagement, drawing attention to the ring’s extravagant appearance.

Rodriguez revealed their engagement on Instagram after eight years together, showing off a ring claimed to feature some of the rarest and most exquisite diamonds in the world. Despite the luxury, Cunningham found the ring excessive and uninspiring.

Details on Ronaldo and Rodriguez’s Relationship

Cristiano Ronaldo, currently playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, first met Georgina Rodriguez in 2016 while he was with Real Madrid. Their meeting occurred at a Gucci store where Rodriguez worked, sparking a long-term relationship that has now culminated in an engagement after nearly a decade together.

Cunningham Shares Her Candid Thoughts on the Ring

During a recent episode of her podcast Show Me Something, Cunningham was straightforward about her reaction to the ring, stating,

“Honestly, not a fan of it. It’s too big. Good for them. Like, I know they have a lot of money, they seem like really good people, but that is just like sometimes it’s too much,”

she remarked.

She further added her surprise about the engagement, which felt long overdue in her view, saying,

“I thought they were already engaged. Like I feel like they’ve been together for like a hundred years. To be honest, if someone were to propose to me and had that, I think I would say no. I’d be like, ‘Do you even know me?’”

Competitive Pressure and Team Challenges for Cunningham

Off the court, Cunningham has been taking on increased responsibilities with teammates Caitlin Clark and Sydney Colson sidelined due to injury. She has shouldered much of the leadership role, particularly as new teammate Odessey Sims adjusts to the Fever’s playing style. Her defensive efforts have been critical in recent games, exemplified in her role in limiting Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers’s scoring.

Cunningham’s Frustration with Refereeing and Upcoming Games

Despite her strong defensive showings, Cunningham also expressed frustration with inconsistent officiating along with the Fever’s narrow loss to the Wings, 81-80. Speaking again on her podcast, she criticized the fouls called on her while guarding Bueckers, saying,

“We’re giving her every freaking whistle last night. You literally couldn’t touch her, couldn’t touch her,”

and added,

“That s**t is so annoying to me. If you’re going to do that, then give it to our guards. I just hate the inconsistency. The treatment she got last night was crazy.”

The Fever will attempt to bounce back as they prepare to face the Washington Mystics on August 15.
