Minnesota Lynx guard Courtney Williams took a pointed jab at the New York Liberty while welcoming new teammate Jaylyn Sherrod, who recently signed with the Lynx after a challenging period with the Liberty. Sherrod began the 2025 season playing for New York but was released after making 18 appearances without significant impact.
On August 8, Sherrod officially joined Minnesota for the rest of the season under a contract valued at $66,079, according to Spotrac. During a recent livestream hosted by Williams and Natisha Hiedeman on their Stud Budz show, Williams expressed her welcome with a clear dig at the Liberty.
“Jaylyn is with the good guys now. She left that punk a** team and she’s with the good guys now.” —Courtney Williams, Minnesota Lynx guard
Williams’ remarks reflect the deep rivalry between Minnesota and New York, intensified by last year’s WNBA Finals where the Liberty defeated the Lynx in five games. This season, the Lynx hold the league’s top seed with a 27-5 record, while the Liberty are the second seed at 21-12, highlighting the ongoing competition between the two teams.
Jaylyn Sherrod moves on from Liberty after limited playing time
Sherrod’s tenure with the New York Liberty included two seasons, with 10 appearances in 2024 and 18 so far in 2025, but her on-court contributions remained minimal. Averaging just 1.5 points over five minutes per game, she struggled to find a meaningful role with the reigning WNBA champions and was eventually released.
Before turning professional, Sherrod had a promising college career at the University of Colorado, where she played 140 games and averaged 10.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. Her performances earned her two All-Pac-12 and three Pac-12 All-Defense team honors, but despite these achievements, she was undrafted in 2024.
Lynx lead Liberty 2-0 in 2025 season matchups so far
The Lynx have approached their games against the Liberty this year with a determination fueled by last season’s finals defeat. Minnesota has already bested New York in their two meetings, first winning 100-93 on July 30 and then outplaying them 83-71 on August 9.
Courtney Williams was instrumental in the most recent victory, posting 14 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. The teams are set to face each other again in their third matchup this Friday, continuing the intense rivalry that shapes their seasons.
With Sherrod now part of Minnesota’s roster, the Lynx not only strengthen their lineup but also send a message to their closest competitors. This move and Williams’ remarks underscore the fierce competition between these Western and Eastern Conference powerhouses as the 2025 season progresses.
