Kyle Petty Hails Shane Van Gisbergen’s NASCAR Impact: “He’s Changing the Game Like Never Before”
Shane Van Gisbergen's NASCAR impact is undeniable, changing strategies and inspiring competitors with his impressive performances on road courses.

Kyle Petty, former NASCAR Cup driver and current broadcast analyst, has expressed strong admiration for Shane Van Gisbergen’s NASCAR impact during his brief tenure in the sport. Petty highlighted Van Gisbergen’s influence not only on road course racing but also on how drivers approach their competition overall.

Assessing Van Gisbergen’s Place Among NASCAR Greats

On the Fast Talk podcast with the Performance Racing Network, Petty described Van Gisbergen’s achievements as “incredibly impressive,” but he tempered expectations about labeling him the greatest driver ever. Petty pointed out that legendary drivers like Jeff Gordon and Dan Gurney set historic standards with multiple consecutive wins and dominance at specific tracks.

I’m just going to give you the impressive,

Petty said.

Is he the greatest of all time, and is this the greatest feat we’ve ever seen? No. I think we saw Jeff Gordon win six in a row or something like that,

he added.

I think we’ve seen other guys win three or four in a row. I go back to (Dan) Gurney winning at Riverside. Every time you showed up at Riverside, Gurney seemed to win. So, we’ve had these blips on the radar screen. I watched the race on TV and they wanted to give him the mantle of ‘Greatest of All Time,’ and he’s won four (road course) races in a row, and so I can’t do that yet,

Petty further remarked.

Van Gisbergen’s Transformative Effect on NASCAR Competitors

Despite his reservations about declaring Van Gisbergen as the all-time best, Petty acknowledged the broader impact the driver is having on NASCAR. Petty emphasized that Van Gisbergen is shifting how competitors prepare and race, especially on road courses, forcing other drivers to study and adapt their tactics.

He noted that, unlike other greats such as Jeff Gordon or Marcos Ambrose, Van Gisbergen’s style is inspiring a strategic change among rivals. Petty stated there hasn’t been a similar game-changing effect by others in recent years.

I look at what Marcos did as a little bit more impressive because I think Marcos took a mid-level car, whether it was Richard Petty Motorsports or JTG Racing (the teams Ambrose raced primarily for, along with short stints with Wood Brothers Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing) and won races with it.

This is a car that should be winning races. I think (SVG) does a phenomenal job, and that’s why I said it’s impressive,

Petty concluded.

Prospects for Van Gisbergen’s First NASCAR Playoffs Appearance

Currently, Shane Van Gisbergen appears well-positioned for his inaugural NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs run with a solid points buffer entering the first round. His skills are expected to shine on the Charlotte Roval, where road racing expertise is critical, which could advance him to the Round of 8.

This possible progression would mark a significant accomplishment given Van Gisbergen’s distinctive skill set and relatively recent entry into NASCAR’s top tier. His evolving influence signals potential long-term shifts in the sport’s competitive landscape.
