In Washington on Sunday, Alec Bohm energized the Philadelphia Phillies with a three-run home run during his return from the injured list, helping the team secure an 11-9 victory over the Washington Nationals and split the four-game series. The Phillies, leading the NL East, hoped this win would halt a recent slide after dropping four of five games.
Right-handed pitcher Aaron Nola also made his return from injury but struggled, allowing six runs over 2 1/3 innings in his first game since May 14. Despite this, Philadelphia managed to overcome their challenges thanks to timely hitting and relief pitching.
Offensive Highlights Fuel Philadelphia’s Comeback
Bohm contributed two hits, including a pivotal single in the fourth inning that forced Washington’s reliever PJ Poulin out of the game. Along with Bohm’s clutch home run against Mitchell Parker, Nick Castellanos added a home run, while Weston Wilson provided a two-run single, extending the Phillies’ lead to 8-6.
The Phillies initially scored an unearned run in the first inning and took advantage of an error by José Tena in the second, which allowed a rally to develop. Philadelphia’s offense capitalized on consecutive singles before Bohm’s powerful homer landed in the visitors‘ bullpen left field.
Washington’s Late Effort Fails to Overcome Phillies
Paul DeJong delivered a three-run homer in the ninth inning, keeping the Nationals in contention. However, their late surge was not enough to overcome Philadelphia’s offensive firepower. The Nationals, who now stand 18-36 in day games, could not mount a full comeback despite DeJong’s effort.
Pitching Performances Shape the Outcome
Washington’s starter Mitchell Parker surrendered six runs, five earned, in just 1 2/3 innings, struggling to maintain consistency after a strong start to the season. Parker’s recent outings mark a significant downturn, posting a 7.30 ERA over his last 20 games following a strong start with a 1.39 ERA in his first five appearances.
Aaron Nola began well by retiring seven of eight batters but faltered when seven consecutive batters reached base, ending his outing on a double by José Tena that evened the score.
Reliever Tanner Banks provided 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, while Jhoan Duran, returning after being hit by a line drive on Friday, secured the final two outs for his 21st save and fifth of the season with the Phillies. Duran closed the game by striking out pinch hitter James Wood with a 101 mph fastball.
Looking Ahead: Upcoming Games for Both Teams
The Phillies have yet to announce their pitching lineup for Monday’s home opener against Seattle. Meanwhile, the Nationals prepare for Tuesday’s continuation of their homestand, with right-hander Jake Irvin (8-7, 5.14 ERA) scheduled to face the New York Mets.
