Defensive standout Derrick Brown made his first appearance for the Carolina Panthers since their 2024 season opener at New Orleans when he took the field on Saturday afternoon against the Houston Texans. Although Brown only played three defensive snaps, his presence marked a significant moment for the team, especially considering he was not expected to participate due to a recent injury.
Head coach Dave Canales admitted that playing Brown was not in the original plan.
“It wasn’t my intention to play Derrick,”
Canales said after the Panthers’ 20-3 loss to the Texans (via Kassidy Hill of Panthers.com).
I’ll be honest, and he was like, ‘Coach, I just got to get out there. I got to get my hands on somebody.’ And he was wearing (defensive line) coach (Todd) Wash too, and I just love the fact he wants to be out there with his guys.
Canales further highlighted Brown’s desire to regain his game feel, stating,
“He wanted to be able to see game speed, be able to get his hands on something and knock something back, and so I was really excited to see Derrick back out there.”
Context on Brown’s Injury and Its Impact on the Panthers
Derrick Brown suffered a torn meniscus during the Panthers’ loss to the Saints early this season, an injury that prematurely ended his campaign. His absence was felt deeply by Carolina, which struggled defensively without him. In 2023, Brown had recorded 103 tackles, two sacks, and an interception, earning his first Pro Bowl selection as a testament to his influence on the field.
The team’s defense has faced significant challenges this season, ranking worst in the NFL in total yards allowed and rushing yards conceded. Under defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, the Panthers gave up 59 offensive touchdowns and set an unwanted league record by allowing 534 points. Brown’s return, even if limited so far, represents hope for improvement.
Looking Ahead: Reinforcements and a Healthier Defense
This offseason, Carolina strengthened its defensive line by signing veterans Tershawn Wharton and Bobby Brown III, along with drafting rookie Cam Jackson. With these additions complementing a healthy Derrick Brown, the Panthers expect their defense to be much more competitive moving forward. General manager Dan Morgan’s efforts to bolster the defensive front suggest a strategic push to reverse the struggles the team has faced in recent years.
Brown’s return symbolizes a critical step in the Panthers’ rebuilding process, and fans will be watching closely to see how much his presence can elevate a defense that has long been in need of a dominant force.
