Jessica Pegula, an American tennis star, has faced many ups and downs throughout her career in the public spotlight. Since turning professional in 2009, the Buffalo native has evolved into one of the seasoned competitors on the WTA Tour, achieving a career-high ranking of World No. 3 in singles and reaching No. 1 in doubles.
Recognized as one of the top American players in recent years, Pegula made history by reaching her first Grand Slam final at the 2022 US Open. Although she was defeated by World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, she has maintained a position as a top contender, consistently remaining within the top 10 of the WTA rankings.
Insights into Pegula’s mental resilience and growth
Despite her extensive experience, Pegula openly admits to facing moments of doubt during matches. In a recent interview with Women’s Health Magazine, the 31-year-old highlighted the importance of mental strength when competing under pressure.
You’re learning life lessons of how to manage people, manage yourself, manage your emotions,
said Pegula.
We are learning and failing in front of a lot of people—or in front of the world, especially if you’re a top player. It makes you so much stronger.

Support system and personal passions alongside tennis career
Pegula often travels with her coaching team and fitness trainers to prepare for tournaments. Outside of tennis, her love for her dogs is a big part of her life. Along with her husband, she founded a nonprofit called A Lending Paw, which supports service dogs. Pegula’s passion extends into collaborations with pet-related brands, such as her partnership with dog food company Maev.
It’s tough to travel with pups, but some players have lovingly suggested adopting a dog together to bring on tour,
Pegula shared.
I’m like, ‘That’s an amazing idea. We need to do that!’

Recent performance and future challenges on the tour
After capturing the Bad Homburg Open title in June, Pegula has experienced setbacks, exiting early at Wimbledon and the DC Open. The 2023 WTA finalist faces significant pressure ahead as she aims to defend ranking points and build on her strong showing at last year’s US Open.
As Pegula continues to navigate these professional tennis challenges, her resilience and determination will be critical for sustaining her position among the world’s elite players and achieving further success.
