Despite these limitations, the Packers want to maximize his time on the field and encourage developing timing and rapport, especially with rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden. Having not practiced since testing his thumb the previous Monday, Love’s decision to proceed with surgery was based on having sufficient recovery time before the season begins.

Upcoming Schedule Supports Gradual Return

The Packers will hold a closed practice on Monday, followed by open sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the Wednesday practice expected to be a walkthrough. On Thursday, Green Bay participates in a joint practice against the Seattle Seahawks, ahead of the preseason finale at Lambeau Field set for Saturday. With the regular season opener against the Detroit Lions scheduled for September 7, Love has nearly three weeks to regain full strength. LaFleur’s willingness to modify practices and incorporate less favored drills reflects his commitment to preparing Love without risking re-injury.

Coach LaFleur’s Perspective on Modified Drills

Addressing the upcoming practice changes, LaFleur acknowledged the necessity of altering his usual methods. He admitted irony in using seven-on-seven drills, stating,

“Hopefully get him back in some capacity into practice,”

LaFleur said on Sunday about Love’s expected involvement. He added,

“We kind of just went through everything. We’re going to alter some things to allow him to get involved. Do my favorite seven-on-seven that I absolutely despise, but in some instances, it’s good. So I’d rather do that than just throw on air. So we’ll incorporate some seven-on-seven into practice.”
