Juan Soto Shatters Expectations with First 30-20 Season as Mets Edge Mariners
Juan Soto celebrates his 30-20 season milestone: 30 home runs and 20 stolen bases, highlighting an exceptional campaign.

Juan Soto reached an impressive career milestone this past weekend, becoming the first player in Major League Baseball this season to record 30 home runs and 20 stolen bases. This significant achievement came during the New York Mets‘ 7-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners in the Little League Classic held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Soto’s steal helped cement his place at the top of the league in this unique category.

Breaking New Ground With Speed and Power

Known more for his hitting prowess than his base running, Soto’s 20 stolen bases represent a new peak in his career. Prior to this season, his personal best was 12 stolen bases, achieved both in 2019 with the Washington Nationals and in 2023 with the San Diego Padres. This season, despite ranking only in the 15th percentile for sprint speed among MLB players, Soto has managed to double what many expected from his speed.

Consistent Offensive Production Amid Team Struggles

Soto’s offensive stats for the year include a .251 batting average, 30 home runs, 71 RBIs, and an .881 OPS. Despite the Mets’ overall struggles, with a 4-11 record so far in August, Soto’s performance stands out as a positive. After missing the All-Star selection, Soto responded with a strong June, posting a .322 average, 11 home runs, and a 1.196 OPS. Continuing that momentum, he has hit five home runs in August, maintaining a .951 OPS during the month.

Advanced metrics reaffirm Soto’s offensive value, where he ranks near the top in batting run value, average exit velocity, barrel rate, hard-hit rate, and squared-up contact. He also leads the league with 96 walks, on pace to claim the league lead for the fourth time in his career.

Defensive and Pitch Recognition Challenges

While Soto excels at the plate, defensively he still faces challenges, particularly as a right fielder where his performance remains below average. Additionally, his production against certain pitches has notably declined. Against sinkers, for example, Soto’s batting average dropped from .379 with a .707 slugging percentage last year to just .197 with a .289 slugging percentage this season, showing an area for potential improvement.

Implications for the Mets’ Playoff Aspirations

Despite Soto’s individual success, the Mets continue to slide down the standings, battling to remain competitive in the National League playoff race. Their upcoming road series against the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals will be critical tests for the team’s postseason hopes. For the Mets to stay in contention for a Wild Card spot, sustained production from Soto will be vital as they seek to reverse their late-season slump.
