Ricky Craven Buys Historic Speedway 95, Plans Major Upgrades for NASCAR’s Legendary Track

Ricky Craven, known for one of NASCAR’s most unforgettable finishes, has embarked on a new journey at age 59 by purchasing Speedway 95 in Maine, a track rich with racing history. This acquisition marks a significant milestone for Craven, whose NASCAR career included 278 Cup Series races, and highlights his deep connection to the sport beyond the driver’s seat.

Speedway 95, established decades ago, was previously owned by Delano Merritt, a longtime figure in the racing community since 1968. Craven’s purchase signals his commitment to preserving and enhancing this iconic facility, reflecting his passion for motorsports and the track’s legacy.

From Historic Finishes to Preserving Family and Racing Heritage

Craven’s name is forever etched in NASCAR history for narrowly edging out Kyle Busch by 0.0002 seconds in the 2003 Darlington race, a record-winning margin that stood for 21 years. Yet, his ties to Speedway 95 run even deeper, rooted in family tradition, as both his mother and father had racing success at this very track in the 1970s.

Reflecting on this personal connection, Craven expressed the significance of the day, acknowledging his long-standing friendship with Del Merritt and the shared history they have at Speedway 95. Receiving both the checkered and black flags from Merritt during his racing days symbolizes their intertwined legacies.

“We will in the near future share with all the people with equity in this track our intentions to do some aggressive vision of how this facility will continue to evolve. It includes several phases that I can not wait to get started.”

Plans for Speedway 95’s Future and Transition

Craven and Merritt will collaborate throughout the 2025 racing season, concluding October 12, to ensure a smooth transition of ownership. Plans for the track involve a multi-phased approach aimed at revitalizing the facility, enhancing the experience for teams, drivers, and fans alike.

This move is seen as not only preserving Speedway 95’s rich heritage but also as a catalyst for growth within the regional NASCAR community. Craven’s dedication suggests the potential for significant upgrades that could secure the track’s place in future racing seasons and attract new talent and audiences.
